Seat cover woes - thoughts?

Hey everyone,

Back in August I got the dealer to replace the leather seat cover on the back of my drivers seat on my 2011 Summit, it was wearing pretty heavily in one location and Jeep ok'ed a replacement. The fit on the new one wasn't that great and there were some wrinkles but I figured they might settle out with some time. I gave it until the end of October and brought it back in for:

-drivers right shoulder of seat cover was baggy with no foam under it
-black plastic cover on the back of the seat would pop off easily
-seat bottom under my left thigh would snap and pop

Dealer ordered new foam back, and black plastic cover. Foam was wrong so my Jeep sat for the past few days while they waited for the right foam to come in. I finally got it back today and was appalled. The drivers shoulder was better, but still not like new...livable though. The rest of the cover is baggy and looks even worse now. Check out the pics.

I ran over to a local upholstery shop and I'm bringing it to them on Monday. They said it looks like they did a poor job fitting the cover and they could take care of it. $150.

When I got home I checked it out some more and really realized just how baggy it is! I can pull the leather a few INCHES off the foam. As I pulled a little I could feel/hear a pop or something come from the cover as it lifted off the foam. Could it be that there is adhesive or retaining clips/pins/velcro that they just didn't connect right? Can anybody that knows upholstery or had a WK2 cover off provide some insight?

To top it off, the snapping and popping from the bottom of the seat is still there too...the only thing that is better is the black cover on the back! I think I am going to loosen the seat bolts myself and see if I can relieve tension or put tension where it needs to be - they had to remove the seat from my understanding so they probably screwed something up there too. Anybody have advice on this?

I should never have brought it in...I had doubts...never again.

Don't mess with it yourself. Let the upholstery shop take care of it. They know far more about this than a dealer ever would.

Geezus... what a shitty job!

The cover I'm going to let the upholstery shop handle for sure. I read a PDF just now that alludes to hook and loop fasteners in the foam and cover. I'm guessing these aren't connected at a minimum. I wish they would have out sourced this to an upholstery shop to begin with. Takes a different type of experience to deal with interiors and get it right!

The only thing I'm considering is loosening the 4 seat bolts to see if I can solve the popping myself.

Re: Seat cover woes - thoughts?

Well, I think I took care of the popping in the seat myself. Loosened the 4 seat bolts and tried a variety of methods when tightening them back down. Ultimately pulling the head rest to the front of the vehicle and pulling out of the vehicle and tightening the front left bolt first worked. Tightened the rest down and no more popping!

Now if the upholstery shop can fix the crappy job the dealer did I'll finally be happy! It's VERY clear the dealer didn't get the hook and loop (velcro) fastened from the cover to the foam. I did some searching last night and found reference to the velcro, and also talked to my brother who does custom car interiors about it. He confirmed the dealer has some asshats working for them and didn't do it right. If I weren't in the Chicago area and he in South Carolina he'd set me up right for free!

Word of warning, never bring your vehicle to Napleton in Arlington Heights, IL.

Sorry to hear it. Just got the Jeep back from having the windshield replaced and both my front seats are in similar shape. They look beat up, feel beat up, and they're making a crackling sound when you press down on them. Night and day difference when compared to the seats in the back. Not sure what the heck they did to them during the install.

Re: Seat cover woes - thoughts?

Update - upholstery shop fixed the cover. NOTHING but the J hooks were connected. Nothing connected the seat cover to the seat even though all the necessary connectors were there! All my complaints are gone now that someone that knew what they were doing and cared worked on it.

I contacted the service director via phone and email. After I didn't hear back for a few days I opened a case with Jeep. I got a call on Friday and gave him my receipt from the upholstery shop, showed him the broken plastic parts, and the marred plastic parts from the dealers "repairs" as well. I mentioned my seat still pops even though I thought I had it solved. He asked that I bring it in today and he'd have his best guy look at it. I called in my way in and the service director wasn't there today. <sigh>
