Service Power steering Sytems !!!!

Hi all ,
i am a newbie to the forum and though I would post my issue and see if anyone else has experienced this.
I took delivery of my 2011 JGC overland on 5/16/2011. Not my first jeep I have owned.. love the jeep brand. My husband and I are long time jeep owners. I am having some issues the dealer cant figure out.
Here is the story ..
Driving home from work (exactly 1 month after purchase), I pull out of the garage and there was a slight pull in the steering to the left. I noticed immediatley the steering became tighter. Not 3 minutes later I look down and at the console and notice and info "i" symbol is on. I scroll through messages and see "Service Power Steering System". Loveley! I only have 1200K on my Jeep!
Drive home call dealer. Cant get in for 4 days. Drop off the jeep on Monday morning. They call me to tell me they know there is a problem, see on the diagnostic test there is a problem, but they have no idea how to fix it or where the actually problem is. They have opened a case with Chrysler Engineering dept to help with a fix. They have no idea when Ill get my Jeep back, its only been 3 days now, but I am without my jeep or a vehicle :-(
Has anyone else experienced this issue????
Help!

Welcome

Sorry to hear about your troubles. At least they are trying their best to try and fix it.

Did they give you a loaner

WOW, a real dealership with real trained mechanics and they can't figure out how to diagnose a power steering unit? Pretty scary.

Re: Service Power steering Sytems !!!!

It sounds like you have the electric power steering. That will probably complicate things. Its a new system so I'm sure your dealer has little to no experience with it.

Re: Service Power steering Sytems !!!!

Well I wouldn't be too shocked that the dealership didnt know how to fix the issue. That is a common occurrence in a first years model or redesign, I think for them they are trying to figure out is it something that could be repaired or does the unit needs to be replaced. Regardless of whats going on if your jeeps in for service they should be giving you a loaner.

Re: Service Power steering Sytems !!!!

Here's an update for you guys. First off the dealer did not and would not give me a loaner. Lamest thing I ever heard of, I buy a 50K Jeep and you cant give me a loaner. Luckily I had my father in-law let me borrow his wrangler.

Good news and this seems to be a common problem with the JGC since it is a new redesign. The dealer ended up going through 2 Chryler engineers and then up to the manager of Chrylser engineering before finding the resolution.

It seems that there is a Firmware update that needs to be done to the JGC's. They cleared the error message, flashed the system, took it on a test drive, and ran a diagnostic test just to be sure. That cleared the issue.

From what the dealer was telling me they have had a few "computer" issues with the JGC that have been coming in and it seems this firmware update takes care of them. The good thing is, it seemed the service manager knows the break down of the system now and explained it in detail to me. I work in IT and DANG its pretty complex. To many protentail risks and inner connects.

I got my overland back lastnight and all seems to be well.

Re: Service Power steering Sytems !!!!

IMHO, you should have driven it right then and there and dropped it off at the dealership. Especially if the vehicle was exhibiting the pulling to the left issue as you described. That's a potentially dangerous situation and should be addressed without you having to wait four days.

As far as the loaner vehicle, even though yours is covered under warranty, the only way you'll get one is if you get the extended warranty through Chrysler. (chryslerwarrantys.com is a site with some great pricing, but don't buy right away, just register and they'll send you a discount the same day to your email address... and yes, that's the correct spelling) All Jeep dealers offer the extended warranty. (there's a lot of discussion here on the site)

Glad to hear it's been fixed. Seems with the computer system in this vehicle, most of the problems that have been posted are remedied by firmware updates.

Now get us some pics of your ride!
