Sharp ticking/metallic rattle over bumps at low speed - driver's side, any ideas?

Hey guys,

WK2 JGC Limited, '14 with 35k miles, V6, tow package.
I am the second owner and recently puchased the vehicle.

Short history:
Within a day of driving off the lot, I noticed that the rear shocks made a horrible clunking noise when driving over bumps at low speeds. These forums helped identify the problem as a defect in the design of the load-leveling rear shocks that came on models with the tow package. Printed the TSB, dealer installed the "new" designed shocks under warranty and sound is gone.

However...

Now when I drive the same speed (below 30mph) over bumps, around turns and uphill, there is a noticeable click or knocking after every bump/crack/rough pavement. It seems to be emanating from the driver's side of the vehicle, from the suspension near the pedals, but I can't pinpoint it.

Took back to dealer, they said the front sway bar needed replacement. Performed the replacement but the sound is still there and getting more frequent.

I don't feel any vibration in the steering column, nor from the dashboard, and I checked and don't think my model has the rattling fastner problem ala TSB 19-001-13

One other clue is that it doesn't seem to make the noise when it rains and the car is wet. Odd.

I've included some audio here for you to listen. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem? The other videos of strange noises don't seem to match my sound it's pretty distinct.

Any ideas at all would be helpful. I'm just out of warranty and this is ruining the experience of owning a "luxury" SUV.

Can't get the video to embed properly, so you can

Thanks for your time and patience,
shu

Hi Shu90,
I think this describes what I am now experiencing in my 14 JGCL. The sound in your video clip is a lot more frequent than what I'm experiencing, but I believe this is the same problem. Did you ever get a resolution for this?

Thanks,
Limitless

Limitless,

The noise in the video is a lot more frequent than during daily driving.

Unfortunately, I have not fixed it.

- It doesn't happen during wet weather, which a tech told me is indicative of it being related to the suspension (?)
- It sounds like something metal is loose somewhere near the driver's side door or left front dash.. or under the front left of the car - it's so hard to pinpoint exactly.
- It doesn't happen at high speed. It seems to happen a little more when driving uphill.

The best way I can describe the sound is almost like if you taped an old radio antennae under the car and then listened to it rattle/click around loosely off the undercarriage once in a while as you drove.

Let me know if you have any ideas -
shu

Have the same issue. I'm scheduled to have it fixed in two weeks. I made an appointment and a loaner waiting for me by then. I purchased the vehicle with 6,000km and pointed it to them during my test drive. They said they will fix it with full satisfaction. Will let you guys know nice I get mine resolved.

I did read somewhere either in this form or elsewhere that similar owners experiencing the issue had their strut and bushing replaced. One had his replaced twice even.

Re: Sharp ticking/metallic rattle over bumps at low speed - driver's side, any ideas?

Thanks for the replies shu and oneframe. There are multiple threads on this problem. However, it appears that there may be more than one problem with similar symptoms. Also, I've seen a few different fixes. When I took my vehicle in for this the dealership said the skid plate was loose, and hitting against a cross member. The repair was to (basically) tighten a bolt. They charged me $122 for that. Bastards. I could have kicked myself for not checking under the vehicle before going to the dealership.

However, the problem still exists, and I'm out of $122. Needless to say, they will see me again. I'll share what I find out after I come from the dealership. Due to the longstanding threads on this forum about this issue, my expectations are low that the dealership can resolve it. We'll see.

Re: Sharp ticking/metallic rattle over bumps at low speed - driver's side, any ideas?

So, what it turned out to be in my case was a hub bearing. I guess that makes sense. This is especially true because some time ago my wife hit a small median strip on that same wheel (passenger side front) and we needed an alignment after that. I guess the wear on the bearing finally took it's toll. Anyway, hope this helps someone.
