Should I get this looked at?

It's been hot here this summer in new york and recently just opened my tailgate today since i don't open it much to begin with, and noticed this almost grinding noise while the tailgate opens. I have a video linked below with the noise. It's never made this noise before. It still works fine but is it because its hot out its doing this or is this bar starting to go? Anyone that can chime in with a suggestion thanks!

Re: Should I get this looked at?

Mine is doing the same thing. I was also wondering if I should have it looked at.

Mine is not doing it and we have already had our ten 90+F days annually for 2016.

Re: Should I get this looked at?

So first reaction is that it's a 2015 and under warranty. Why not have it looked at? Upon looking at your video a little closer, it looks like you have a line forming on the strut that faces closest to the camera. Maybe it's just the way it came across in the video?

I had an issue with mine where it the lift gate wouldn't open reliably and the root cause was the strut needed to be replaced. There was a leak on the inside of the housing. Your scrape appears to be on the outside, but at some point when you need to open the gate, it might become an issue.

The manual release is in a TERRIBLE location, back in the rear cargo area. So if you're loaded up and need to get it opened manually, you'd need to remove your stuff from the cargo area and get to the back via the back seat. I suggested to to the service manager at the dealership and to FCA Customer Service that it would be a huge benefit to have an override or release controlled somewhere within UConnect. Service Manager agreed and was going to submit the idea to FCA. The FCA Representative I spoke with noted it. I'm not holding my breath.

The line you see in the video is suppose to be there. I think il just wait till it doesn't work anymore then bring it in. I don't feel like hearing " works fine to me"

Re: Should I get this looked at?

Definitely sounds like the power liftgate actuator/motor is making noise, I have replaced a few of those for being weak and not fully opening the door but have never heard one make that noise. But if that were to get written up in my dealership and I was the tech working on that jeep I would have no problem ordering a new one if your in 3/36 warranty personally.

Re: Should I get this looked at?

Yes, there are three options to open the gate. Fob, overhead console or the lift gate itself. I should have been more clear in my previous post. The manual release is in a bad location. In the event that any of the 3 options don't work, you'd need to manually open the gate.

Re: Should I get this looked at?

Checked mine yesterday when it was good and hot. It does not make that much noise. A little, but not like that.
If you feel frisky and want to save some time, might try removing it and greasing the worm gear inside. It's like a shaft drive garage door opener. That is, if it is serviceable.

Re: Should I get this looked at?

I've looked at many other SUV's from other manufacturers with power liftgates. None of the others have the weak/straining sound that the Chrysler power strut produces. Guess they obviously used the lowest bidder. Even my dealer said the strut will fail early, whatever that means. And they are expensive to replace.
