Re: Shudder solution!

I am not sure other than a revision to drivability that was previously done a esc reprogram and a revised proximity tsb and a liftgate tsb. when i go back to get the liftgate module replaced i'll get the tsb #'s that were done.

all i know is every day i hammer it at least once to make sure i'm not dreaming

Re: Shudder solution!

Bringing it back to the dealer tomorrow, hopefully the shudder will be gone afterwards! also going to ask them about a noise coming from the dash?

Re: Shudder solution!

Hey guys/gals. Like most of you, I have been fighting the shudder since purchase of my WK2. Here is a little background as my situation may be slightly different than others. I took my Jeep in about 1500 miles ago for a shudder that was occurring around 45mph or so. They evaluated it and told me that it had something to do with the torque converter, lockout...blah blah. Honestly, I didn't really understand exactly what they were trying to tell but they did finally say that it was a common occurrence and has been an issue since the 2005 models. BTW... my vehicle was NOT a candidate for the TSB regarding the DTCM. Everything is up to date.
SO I reluctantly took my Jeep home only to continue to have the issue. Now let me say that my wife also has a WK2 that does NOT have this issue. Mind you I can feel a ever so slight shudder on a super smooth road and if I am really focusing, but I mean it's really nothing on hers. Something I could consider normal and not a problem.

So a few weeks went on and I really couldn't take it any more. To elaborate a bit on my shudder issue, in case it's in fact different from what most of you report. It is not all the time, but happens a couple times a day depending on how much I am driving. The shudder can be felt by both the driver and passenger. You can feel it in the steering wheel and the seat of your pants. When it starts up around 45mph it will actually get stronger up to about 55-60mph when it finally levels off. If you have it in the "manual shift" mode it will only occur in 4th gear (both sport and auto), but goes away if you move it to "SNOW" and then comes right back when you switch it. Anyway, I took it in again the other day. First report... again, they say it is normal. I go on to explain to them that I just don't agree and request a ride along with a Tech. I was able to get the Jeep to mostly duplicate the issue and the tech that had been checking it out said "that is a completely different shudder than what we were looking for" He said he would call Chrysler on Monday (Today) and get back to me. Today I got a call from the service department letting me know that this is a "Star Case?!?" Whatever that means. He said they have had some issues like mine and suspect that I need something called an "isolator" that should secure the drive shaft (I think). He said it should be in next week some time. He also said, that he wasn't 100% that it would take care of the issue. But this is a huge step from me feeling like I am crazy for thinking the shudder isn't "normal". As soon as I get the Jeep serviced, I will let all know if it in fact fixed the issue. Fingers are crossed and best wishes to all who shudder.

Re: Shudder solution!

I am still waiting for the paperwork but the isolator did not fix my shudder. If anything it has made the whole driveline behave odd. Sometimes it feels like there is a slip in torque converter. Other times I notice that it really clunks into a gear. Shudder at all speeds is worse. They said they would have to call Chrysler. I am waiting for feedback. In the meantime I have called Jeep Customer service to open a case for this and SEVERAL other issues with my car. Suffice it to say I am not very happy with this vehicle right now.

Matt, my experience in rural NC KS when our GC was new is that service can be hit-and-miss. They just didn't sell enough of these to have much experience beyond the bare-bone basics, and presumably the same holds true today with the WK2.

Of course, in and around KC/Wichita it was and is a different story. Whatever, good luck!

Re: Shudder solution!

I'll be curious to hear what your fix was. My dealer is trying to contact Chrysler's technical folks.

In parallel I called customer service to open a complaint for this and my rear flipper window. They told me they can't do much for the shudder without a diagnosis. Why are the Case Managers the same as their Customer service people? These people clearly don't know anything about cars.

It's official, I regret buying this car. 6 days in the shop, a defective amplifier, defective driver side view mirror, defective front tweeter, replaced blower motor, defective flipper window rendering my tailgate useless, random panic alarm displays, and SHUDDER. And only more to come when they actually decide to replace the flipper window and attempt to diagnose the shudder. It's been a fun FOUR months!!

From what i can recall off hand it was the rear differential and the drive shaft that was causing my shudder.

Re: Shudder solution!

Hmm.... if yours is like mine than they should put two and two together. It should not take the technical team a week to get back to my dealer.

Thanks for letting me know. I'll let you know if I ever hear back.

I don't think the problem you had is the shutter problem. It sounds like it was just a drivetrain vibration caused from a driveshaft problem. This would be far different than a torque converter shutter that seems to be limited to the 5.7 engines.

Re: Shudder solution!

Our 2008 Honda Odyssey had the exact same problem. I am referring to a shudder while cruising, not the shudder with WOT. They tried a reprogram, didn't work. Then replaced the torque converter which was the fix. I think the lock up is faulty and that will ultimately be the fix for these Jeeps, unfortunately not as simple as a reprogram but then again I'm an enthusiast not an engineer. I am waiting for first oil change to complain about it and see if they seem knowledgable about a true fix. My Jeep rocks otherwise.
