Slight wiff of Gear oil or grease on new 2015 Overland

I was under the hood/car of what ever wheels I had when I was young and I know the smell of gear oil oh too well and some greases that smell similar. It's very strong.

Ever since I got my Overland (now with 1000 miles few weeks old) I now and than catch a wiff of a Gear Oil like smell.

It's so slight, I sometimes think it's my imagination or it a smell similar that I'm getting confused. Like it might be the interior plastics/leather out gassing that just smells similar.

Not sure if it's possibly normal and something got a little over greased under the hood. Or it's perhaps a similar smell that some people complained comes from the HVAC.

I've looked every where and no sign of leaks.

Any ideas what the source might be, or what to check?

Front wheel bearings caused by heat from the brakes?

I have a 2015 overland 4x2 and I too smell some kind of oil from time to time (especially after I've driven it and I get out of the car).

My nose is not adapted to differentiate different oil smells (kudos), but I can at least tell it's some kind of oil. It's not as potent as gasoline though.

I was washing the car today and when washing the front grill I could smell it.

Sniff and looked around.

I smelled it best where the arrow is.

Not necessarily what it's point it at, it could be coming from below. That's just where I smelled it.

I checked under engine cover. And checked inside air cleaner.

CV Boots look could. If one of those were freshly torn, it might have that smell.

Just remember that your diffs have a vent tube that comes off the diff to vent for oil expansion.

I never smelled it on the 2014 Limited in 18 mo/27K miles.
So I don't think it's the vents.

Other than a leak, thats the only way oil vapors come out of the diffs. You must have a smell coming from somewhere else besides the diffs.
