So I get my leather dash replaced then I notice this...

Hey guys, I posted on here last month about my leather dash bubbling within 3 weeks of me bringing it home. I called the dealer and they ordered a new dash. After having my Jeep for 5 days they called and said it was done. The morning I picked up my Jeep I had to work that morning so I had to run there fast, turn in my loaner vehicle and pick up mine and then race to work. The point on me including this information is because I didn't really have time to go over the vehicle at the dealership to make sure they did everything right. To be honest, I really didn't think I had to. I did get it and look at the dash and made sure it fit correctly and lined up well with no gaps etc. Anyway, as I was driving to work I noticed the control panel with the U-connect screen wasn't pushed in. Luckily it snapped in pretty with no problems. It made me wonder what else did they not finish. Fast forward to last night when I'm getting off work I go and get in my Jeep and noticed an enormous amount of condensation on the INSIDE of my Jeep (I posted about this problem here before). I look over the inside of my entire vehicle for any wetness...leaks etc. The floors/ carpets are dry etc....no liquid in my Jeep. This phenomenon happens every once in a while and I have no idea where this water is coming from to condense on the INSIDE of my Jeep. So just now I go back out and look around the window and notice that there isn't a rubber gasket around my windshield. Now, at this point, I don't know if there was ever a gasket there to begin with. I don't even know if maybe this is the design. Toward the base of the windshield there is a rubber piece..gasket?..that goes up part way and then it stops. You can see it in my picture below. So I'm thinking that maybe the dealer had to take the windshield off to put in the dash and they forgot to put it back on? So I'm curious if there is suppose to be a gasket that goes around the entire windshield? If so, this really pisses me off because of their shabby workmanship. Do you think Jeep will give me some type of compensation for this?

First thing is take it to the dealer to have them look at it. If they did make the mistake, then you could ask them to totally detail your car inside/out and check for anything else they missed. If they are willing to right the wrong, asking for too much might not go well.

Thank you for the reply, so is there suppose to be a rubber gasket that goes around the entire windshield?

I know a person who works for a major auto glass company. I just emailed them asking them if there should be a gasket. As soon as I hear from them, I will let you know.

So my source got back to me and they sent the pics over to their Install Manager. He looked it up and said it's correct.

Re: So I get my leather dash replaced then I notice this...

So just to make sure:

The first image shows the top of the windshield (where it ends and the roof begins) and the second one shows the lower part of the windshield (the lower part of the A-Pillar). I'm asking because those close-ups shots make it a bit difficult to know what they are actually showing.

IF they do show what I think, I can tell you that my gasket looks just like yours. Here's a picture of mine:

Re: So I get my leather dash replaced then I notice this...

BTW, many 'modern' vehicles tend do have 'naked glass' around the edges of the windshield these days. On my Lincoln, it's the same. compared to the older cars where the glass was virtually sealed in by a big, fat rubber-edge, I can understand why you weren't sure about yours. It looks a bit odd and you get the feeling that something could be missing...

Thank you again for the replies and thanks for the photo's. GCOverland, the pics you sent are from the same area on my Jeep so it does appear to not have a gasket to cover the edges of the windshield....it appears this is the design. I was almost hoping that it was a mistake by the dealer because it may explain the odd condensation that accumulates inside the vehicle at times.

I understand what you mean and it's very frustrating when you can't put your finger on what exactly caused the problem.

Here in the Tampa area, we had some jumps in temperature lately between day and night but depending on the degree of condensation, that might not be the only reason. It's difficult for me to judge because our vehicles are garaged and when I park outside once in a while, condensation tends to appear on the outside...

Did you ask the dealer what the cause could be and if they have a specific procedure to test if everything is tight?

Re: So I get my leather dash replaced then I notice this...

mate they dont remove the windshield to replace the dash the screen is also sikaflexed in not held in by a rubber gasket. i had mine replaced and it was done within a day. i cant see how it took them 5days unless they run a busy shop and werent on it full time. from memory the time allocated from jeep is 4hrs? .

Cool, I didn't realize until now that you live in Tampa. Mine seems to happen every once in a while....when it gets cold. It did, however, happen the last two nights. I park outside at work and when I get off at 9 is when I notice it. I'm going to see if it happens tonight. We had a pretty good rain all day on Monday so I'm not sure if somehow that contributed. The odd thing is that nothing in my vehicle is wet. The floors were dry...seats ...everything except the front INSIDE windshield and the very back glass. The back glass gets condensation on it also...not so much on the sides. If it happens again tonight Ill post a picture.

From past experience, I could just about guarantee that if you had even a pinhole leak anywhere around the windshield you'd most likely find water inside your Jeep.
