Re: So I left my car running today for 4 hours.

The push button is new for me like most of the folks here. But, I always know that I have to push 3 buttons when turning on or off the Jeep. Radio, Fan and Engine. I have always been turning off the radio after reducing the volume to almost zero 'coz I hate it when I turn on the car, the radio screams loud! Also, I have always been turning off the fan 'coz i do not like the warm/cold blast of air when I turn on the car. The only new button for me is Start/Stop.

I can understand how one can forget to shut off due to the quiet engine... but doesn't the door chime sound if the engine is running and the door is ajar?

Since I don't have this system on my current old vehicle, how does the keyless system work. If I knew that, maybe I could see the advantages like you guys have told me. And I do assume you also get keys in case the computer screws up right? So you walk up to your locked vehicle with your keyless fob in your pocket, then what? Thanks I appreciate the info, Don.

Grab the handle which unlocks vehicle. Get in. Push start button while pushing down brake pedal.

I have to admit that is pretty cool. Thanks again all. I guess the technology in my 02 SUV is a little outdated even though it works. Looking forward to my new Jeep in a few months.

After finding the hatch open a couple times, I fabricated a plastic guard as discussed somewhere in this forum.

Its like having a heater (heaters were optional at one time) and then air-conditioning after living without for years. I don't know how I've survived all those years without the remote start and keyless entry You know, think they should get rid of those newfangled automatic transmissions while they're at it? Those things cost a lot of money.
i too remember when heaters were optional; and i like the keyless ignition on my new overland, but it needs a chime when the key is moved a few feet from the vehicle when the engine is running.

Maybe they can put a taser in the fob to give you a shot in the ass if you leave the engine running.

It certainly lets the occupant know (i.e. the passenger when you the driver run into a store leaving the vehicle running) that the key has left the vehicle! I'm sure I'm not the only one who has heard "Don't ever do that again. Leave the @#X%& key in the truck next time!"

Re: So I left my car running today for 4 hours.

Forgive me but my evil mind just thought up this scenario. And remember I don't have a Jeep yet (this fall), so I'm wondering how this would play out. You are walking towards your vehicle in a shopping center parking lot. You are at the farthest distance that it detects the remote in your pocket. A car thief roaming the lot comes up looking for a vehicle to steal and sees your beautiful new Jeep Grand Cherokee. He is alot closer to your vehicle than you are. He grabs the door handle to see if it is locked. Does it let him in because you are within the range with your remote? Can he then just push the start button and drive away? I was just wondering about that. I could see that it wouldn't happen if the dectectable range was like 20 feet or less but if it is alot further could this happen? And please forgive me, I worked in chemistry labs my whole career so my mind is the type that always comes up with questions about things. Or maybe it's my OCD?? . I love jeeps and will have one soon. Thanks for putting up with me, Don

The fob has to be within 5' of the door handle for a hand to activate the unlock by grabbing the door handle.

Over-penetration sucks...hate to have to be that close and end up with bullet holes in the Jeep

Re: So I left my car running today for 4 hours.

This technology can really trip you up. I went to a local store, was talking to my wife in the car, pulled up, put the parking brake on, push the "OFF" button and put it in Park, Left the GC and locked it.

Wrong Sequence! One must put it in Park and then push the off button. The V6 is so quiet we didn't notice it. Now we mentally check to see if the "seat assist" has pushed the seat back, then we know its really OFF. DUH!
