Going on two months with my 1\14 build. Anyone finding the windshield glass to be extremely prone to scratches and chips. NY has some bad potholes but it seems every single rock ends up chipping the glass. Plus somehowe the wife scratched up the glass with the recent ice frost we had. Never had that happen before. Ideas for getting those microscratches out as they are directly in line of sight and a pain when sunny out.

Yup already had my windshield replaced. Switched my insurance to full glass and got a new windshield as I picked up over five chips in a month period. I've never owned a vehicle that was so prone to rock chips. I thought the new windshield would be better but on the way home from the glass shop I picked up another small chip. I spoke with Crysler about this and they said oh ok. The new windshield was a OEM windshield from Chrysler.

Is it the glass or could it just be something about the aerodynamics that make it more prone to take rocks to the windshield? (I have no knowledge experience with glass so just wondering).

I just remember on my Avalanche it seemed like every rock hit at about the same basic height on my hood.

It's not just Chrysler glass that's cheap...it's most automobile glass these days.

My Evo X, Xterra Pro4x, STI...all had cheap glass that was prone to chips and scratches.

I'm contantly lifting my wipers off the glass and wiping the blades to minimize sand scratches.

You make a very good point which I learned the hard way. I forgot about my arched scratch on windshield #1.
I parked nose in at an inn with an asphalt shingle roof (like most of us) with a large overhang. It rained overnight. One wipe of the blade and I had a scratch right across my field of view... soft windshield!

When we picked up our brand new 2011 we got less than 5 miles from the dealer and a rock hit an broke the windshield... Had it replaced twice in the 3 years we had it... Thankfully the 2014 so far hasn't had that issue....
BTW, make sure they replace the windshield with the Mopar glass, the second replacement they put in an aftermarket windshield, it didn't fit right and whistled... Talked to the replacement company and was told that they had to replace almost all the aftermarket ones. Something about the seal at the top not being the same.

I agree. Chips very easily.

Does it have to do with it being lighter? I mean, are the new windshields lighter than the ones made several years ago? My old ZJ had its windshield replaced only once in its 15 year life.

I agree, my new 2014 Overland had less than 5000 miles on it and a very small rock hit it on the passenger side. It got a star burst in it and when SafeLite went to repair it the guy busted it all the way across to the drivers side while he was pulling a vacuum on it to apply the resin. My insurance company told me that they have lost count of the windshields that they are having to replace in the 2014 Jeeps. My old 2002 Jeep has 178000 miles on it as has the factory windshield in it. It has a few chips in it and some big rocks have hit it too. I believe that the glass today is just cheap and will not take much to scratch, chip, and break. I did get another OEM factory windshield put back in my 2014 Overland, but boy my insurance didn't want me too. Also I used the Jeep dealership to install it and it looks like it was done at the factory. My company vehicle is a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee and SafeLite had to put 3 windshields in it before it was right. All this was done in a 3 week period. The first one poured water and the next one had an air leak so bad it sounding like the window was half way down.

Hmm, I'm wondering if THIS

New: Acoustic windshield (Summit)

change for MY15 could also mean that (the Summit, at least) could get a new type of windshield? On the other hand, it could also mean that from MY15 on on the Summit, you can only see the damage and won't be able to hear it the moment it occurs..;)

i have a 2014 durango and i have the same problem, i think the windows got scratched from some dust in my wiper blades.

and i picked up atleast a dozen chips. I've driven my ford for 3 years and i've had plenty of scary moments when i hear a loud crack from getting hit, but no chips!! The durango windshield chips at the slightest thing hitting it.

It's not just a MOPAR problem. My current 2013 Chevy Silverado company truck gets a chip every time it is hit by a rock. I am running with 7 or 8 chips now. This is my fifth Silverado in a row (I get a new one every 2-2.5 years) and it has never been this bad.

Our 2014 JGC has thus far been good but we have not taken any rock hits. The 1997 JGC we sold when we got the new one was on it's original windshield.

I was driving to the mall and heard a rock hit the glass. When I parked I looked closely all over the windshield for the impact and saw nothing. My daughter was like "That was loud, happy nothing happened." We walked out of the mall 2 hours later and there was a line from the passenger side edge to almost the middle of the pass seat. :/ I had it replaced 2 days later and by then it went all the way passed the rear view mirror.

My co-worker just had his windshield replaced yesterday in his 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo due to it started leaking. SafeLite installed it about 2 years ago. This morning while driving to work and bird hit his windshield. He was doing 70 MPH when it happen. He said it sounded like a bomb when off inside the car. There was glass chips all in the dash and passages seat. I glad it was not mine. :)

I thought i was just unlucky

Two weeks after I picked up mine I got a rock chip in the same spot my previous car had got one.

Then the other day I was driving along and saw something hit my windshield out of nowhere(there were no cars anywhere on the road with me)

It was round so I was thinking maybe a BB shot or something and I got a small crack. I used some bullseye repair resin both chips.

It repaired on and the second one it just made it larger.

I have been holding back from getting ir replaced and now reading this thread I might as well because by the sounds of it I would acquire a new thread again.

To the poster talking about the acoustic glass

From the 2011 all WK2 have Acoustic windsheild and front windows not just the summit.

It's not just limited to the outside of the glass...the inside is a scratch magnet, too. Tried to vacuum my new purchase ('14 Overland), ran the vacuum over the defroster vent, barely grazed the windshield and now I have a lovely addition to my new Overland. Looks like i will be making the safe lite call soon. :(

Uhh what? Is the nozzle on that vacuum metal? If it's plastic like the majority of the vacuums out there, there's no way it scratched your windshield.

Just in from the body shop...New windshield = $848. Because I have the rain sensor and collision warning sensors, they recommended OEM as opposed to after market. They did say that after market is better glass, but doesn't play nice with technology. Here's to the hope that future builds will have some higher quality glass!

I drove out west from Virginia back in April, with several chips on my 2013 JGC Ltd. windshield. I had to have the windshield replaced in South Dakota for it had a crack about 2 ft.long that developed in one day. It was the rain sensitive so I had to wait an extra day for the glass place to get it in. All turned out very well. I had $250 deductible. Needless to say I will check with my insurance co. and increase the glass coverage to full glass coverage after reading all these entries.
