So if you have the auto lower setting turned on, it will only begin to lower once you put the vehicle in park. That would be ridiculous if it automatically lowered below a certain speed. So you're saying it would lower at every stop light or in traffic? No.

So the jeep will only lower to entry/exit height once it's placed in park. Then, if you open the door while its lowering it will stop the lowering process. Then once door is closed again it will complete the lowering. So to have the vehicle fully lowered prior to getting out you either have to wait to open the door until it's done, or you can manually select to lower it while you're below 15mph that way the process has already begun and will likely be lowered by the time you're stopped and open the door.
You have to press the button first. The entire procedure from the Owner's Manual:

Entry/Exit Mode (Lowers the vehicle approximately 1.5 in (38 mm) – This position lowers the vehicle for easier passenger entry and exit as well as lowering the rear of the vehicle for easier loading and unloading of cargo. To enter Entry/Exit Mode, press the “Down” button once from (NRH) while the vehicle speed is below 25 mph (40 km/h). Once the vehicle speed goes below 15 mph (24 km/h) the vehicle height will begin to lower. If the vehicle speed remains between 15 mph (24 km/h) and 25 mph (40 km/h) for greater than 60 seconds, or the vehicle speed exceeds 25 mph
(40 km/h) the Entry/Exit Mode change will be can- celled. To exit Entry/Exit Mode, press the “Up” button once while in Park Mode or drive the vehicle over 15 mph (24 km/h).

Yes, for a 14 (as the OP has) you have to do that. For the 15-16's you can set it in Uconnect.

No. Well first off I'm not exactly sure what you mean about having to press the button first. You don't have to press a single thing for automatic entry/exit height. When you out the vehicle in pro it will do it for you so as long as that feature is turned on in the Uconnect settings. However...2011-2013 and early built 2014 models never got the automatic lowering feature so the ONLY way to lower those models to entry/exit setting is by pressing the down button.

In regards to pressing the down button on the models equipped with auto lower, all I'm saying is that you can get the car to entry/exit height before you park that way you it's fully lowered already when you get out. Otherwise you either have to wait to open the door or it simply won't be fully lowered yet until you close the door again. As it states in your post you can press the down button below 25mph, then once the vehicle slows below 15mph it will start to lower, or press it at 15mph or slower and it will begin to lower right away. Or lastly, press nothing and simply put it in park and it'll do it for you automatically.

Re: Software upgrades?

Well putting it in park is the key.... that's what starts the lowering process, but then as soon as someone opens the door, it stops. It just seems like there should be a way for it to lower faster when it hits park....and not stop when a door opens..?

You probably don't want it to lower any faster or that would potentially lower the life of the valves that control the pressure in the various parts of the system. Rapid compression and decompression is a sure way to blow seals and connectors.

Further, the fact that it stops if you open the door is a safety issue. You don't want the vehicle to be moving up or down while someone has their leg hanging out and is trying to step firmly on the ground, especially on slippery pavement.

The majority of 2014 models have auto entry/exit feature. Its only some very early built models that didn't get it.
