Stall after start

My 2011 GC (V6 Laredo) is in the shop today...been having an intermittent problem where the vehicle stalls after starting and then will not start unless the key position is cycled to off and then back on. No MFL but when the car would not start and the security system light flashed. We have had problems with one of the key fobs, but I replaced the battery on it twice and we reported the problem to the dealer and they could not find any faults.

Will report on what the dealer comes up with but I was just curious if anyone else has had this issue.

UPDATE-

I am attempting to put together a list of all owners experiencing this TIPM issue. Right now we are spread across a number of sites and I think the first step to getting action on resolving this issue is better organizing ourselves.

Please consider completing the following google docs form regarding your issue: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1dkIUvJx2vX7TG-RagAMskkuns-cvUCY1AJ8ctjIlD18/

So it sounds like the rumor of the supplier going bankrupt might be true after all.

If you haven't already done so I'd highly recommend filing a complaint with the government: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/. Not sure what good (if any) it will do but at this point I think it is best to pursue all available channels.

I've sent a demand letter certified mail to Chrysler's mid-atlantic business office today. It is my understanding that it is standard to allow 30 days for the company to reply to such a letter, so I will have to wait until September 28 before I can take further legal action. In the meantime I will be seeking the advice of a lawyer experienced in this area.

My dealer just called and said that he was told my ship date is currently September 10th. He also confirmed that mine would be coming from the new vendor. He told me that there were 748 people currently waiting on a TIPM. He wasn't sure if that was in Atlanta, the Southeast, or Nationwide. It's a staggering number at any level. He feels that this may become a recall item. I'll continue to post updates as I receive them.

Bullrider - how many people have completed the form so far?

Unfortunately only 4, not including myself, and one guy on there already had his replaced a couple days ago. I tried posting it on edmund's where a lot of people with this issue seem to be but it was removed and let's just say I'm pretty sure I'm banned from that board now

Do you know if your chrysler case manager is from the parts expediting team? If so, do they know you're not driving your jeep as a result of this? At this point I trust exactly 0 of what my case manager tells me but apparently if they know that you can't drive your vehicle you get some sort of special status as far as getting the part to your dealership goes.

Unreal. I'm having the same exact problem. I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee Limited. It took them a week to figure out the problem was a bad TIPM and it's been 4 weeks since the part was ordered. Still no ETA.

I've called Chrysler multiple times and all they've done is refer me to some relationship manager that hasn't even called me yet. After doing a simple search online I see that Chrysler has had many problems with TIPM's on many of their models, including Wranglers. This has been happening for years and it is wide spread so it makes no sense that they don't keep these in stock. Seems to me like Chrysler knowingly sold these cars with a known defect instead of fixing them prior to selling the cars.

Meanwhile my jeep sits at the dealership lot, depreciating every day, while I make my payments, pay for my sirius subscription and insurance. They are paying for a rental but it's a Dodge Avenger. I don't know how much longer I can take this.

Ridiculous.

I just wanted to chime in again and see if everyone was having the exact same issue. In my case, after starting the vehicle it would run for less than two seconds and then engine would shut off. The vehicle would still be ON but the engine off. The red security light in the gauge cluster would also start flashing after the engine died. After turning the vehicle off, this would sometimes happen two or three more times in a row before the engine finally stays running. The occurances seem completely random, and it may happen several times a day to once a week.

This failure mode is described verbatim in the owners manual on page 19, and is caused when the vehicle detects an invalid key fob during the ignition sequence. Not having a full service manual, does anyone know if the TIPM can induce this failure with the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) that is used for keyless enter and go?

Exactly my issue. Read back through this thread... the TIPM controls many things, one of them being the fuel pump.

After working fine for several months it just happened to me again yesterday...seems like it never happens to my spouse which is good because she drives the Jeep just about all of the time.

Could take it in but if it's only intermittent what can the dealer do to troubleshoot it?

As someone who has been dealing with this for the past month, please please take my advice. BRING IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP NOW. There has been a consistent 1 month+ wait for the TIPM part. Mine just arrived at the dealership today after it was ordered on August 8, and that was only after hounding Jeep about it for the past month. The dealership is still waiting for another 3 to arrive.

This problem will not go away and it will get worse, to the point where at best it will take 3+ attempts to start the vehicle to at worst completely stalling while you are moving (as it happened to me at 40mph).

Chances are the dealer will be familiar with the problem already and if not Chrysler definitely is. Keep on top of the dealer and Jeep until it is resolved and do not just ignore the problem, it will come back to bite you. Checkout the edmund's forum on this if you don't believe me.

To my surprise I received a call from the dealership yesterday telling me my car was fixed. They had just received a few TIPM's that day and installed it right away. There was no cost for me as I am still under warranty.

As I was typing this I realized I hadn't tried to start it yet this morning after letting it sit all night.... It started fine. I'm hoping this problem has been resolved.

After driving around the Dodge Avenger rental they gave me for the past 5 weeks it felt strange to drive my Cherokee. Glad to have it back.

Hey all - this is my first post but I figured I should weigh in.

I just started having this same issue you all are describing on my '11 Jeep GC. Started yesterday evening when leaving work. Tries to start when pressing ignition button and then dies. Did it again this morning and took about the 5th try before it maintained RPMs and stayed running.

Took it to the dealer this morning and they could not get me in (which I expected), so I have an appointment this Monday for them to DX. I will let you guys know how it goes as well.

Thanks to all who have given support on this forum as I have found a lot of helpful information!

Dealer just called and confirmed they are replacing TIPM and on back order and will call in a few days with part status. I am in rental provided by dealership.

I went ahead and filled out the Google Form as well - let's hope we can get some resolution behind this issue all of us are having.
