Stall after start

My 2011 GC (V6 Laredo) is in the shop today...been having an intermittent problem where the vehicle stalls after starting and then will not start unless the key position is cycled to off and then back on. No MFL but when the car would not start and the security system light flashed. We have had problems with one of the key fobs, but I replaced the battery on it twice and we reported the problem to the dealer and they could not find any faults.

Will report on what the dealer comes up with but I was just curious if anyone else has had this issue.

I bought my 2012 GC Overland used. Heaven help me. I have replaced the TIPM--at my own cost because Chrysler will not admit they have a problem. I am still having the issue with the vehicle stalling after start then not cranking the next time. The dealership says it is giving no codes whatsoever and of course it will not perform on command when they have a technician available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check out http://verticalvisions.com/index.php for lots of TIPM reading and solutions.

My 2013 has the TIPM recall done but I had it stall on me a few times before I read to hold the start button down until it starts instead of just pressing and releasing. I don't think I've had a stall since I started doing that. It does have long starts some mornings though.

I keep a spare recall relay in the glovebox just in-case.

This sounds like a similar issue I am having with my fathers Jeep. The dealer has replaced the fuel thing in the TIPM twice and that didn't fix it. They think it could be the Wic module, so we shall see. Anyways, I have always been able to start it by inserting the fob into place and turning it. Last time, I just held the key up to the push button and it started up. For those that find themselves in this situation, I hope either of those two help you start the Jeep until you can get it fixed.

I've never had to do that, however after reading several threads on this very topic I decided to try a different method of starting. I now hold the start button until the vehicle starts and I haven't had a stall since then. It took some patience because I was used to just jabbing the button for the last 4 years with good results. But for some reason it decided it wanted a little more of a "push" from me. All is good now. Hope it works for you!!

Just started having this issue yesterday (a few days after my son was born, great timing from Chrysler as always), so I'm just throwing my hat in the ring here. I have the 2012 Grand Cherokee V6 Laredo, and it has the TIPM 'fix' (poor-man's recall imo) already. I'll give the 'holding the start button down' thing a try and hopefully it'll help. Luckily it's just annoying now but I'm afraid I'll end up getting stranded eventually with a newborn in the back seat!

I keep a spare recall relay in the glovebox just in-case.
Can you expand on that? I've been noticing some other TIPM nonsense more often lately (like the windshield wipers turning on when I use the turn signal), would changing the recall relay help?

thanks dawg. Since I already have the bypass installed can I just replace the relay that's mounted to the frame? When the dealership installed the bypass they shrink wrapped it to the TIPM/fuse box housing and now I can't open it (lol) and I'd rather not deal with that just yet.

I have had the recall done for the fuel pump relay. Within 20 minutes of getting the Jeep back it stalled. That was two years ago, it continues to stall on start and even driving in a straight line or turning a corner. I learned to drive like I'm 99 years old at a corner or traffic light, leaving plenty of gap between traffic during a turn and have an exit strategy in case it stalls in traffic.

I've got the restart down to 3 seconds, wave my arm for behind traffic to see, hard brake, throw into park, press the button to get out of run, foot on brake, press button to restart, slam into drive and stand on it

So frustrated with this defect, I've tried all sorts of start up procedures for a start up sequence nothing has worked, still randomly stalls, multiple times a month

HELP anyone!

I've thought about putting on the recalled external relay an led showing 12V power in and an led showing 12V power out to fuel pump. The idea is at a stall if I can go open the hood and see if either side of the relay is not showing power. Anyone know the wiring for the relay?

Thanks, scared in Michigan!

Can it be started in neutral? I know that with a normal key you can put the car in neutral and restart while coasting but I've never tried it with a push button ignition. You'd probably have to put your foot on the brake enough to illuminate the brake lights to override the interlock but that would still be better than a complete stop and putting it in park.

I might try that on a deserted road this weekend to see if it works. I know you have to hold the button for several seconds to shut off the engine while in drive (to prevent accidentally shutting down on the road). That came up with those people claiming runaway vehicles that couldn't be turned off.

The Safety Recall R09 from July 2015 details all of the procedure to install the external relay. I've read that several people have examined their "repaired" TIPM following the recall procedures and discovered poor workmanship. You may want to do the same with your Jeep.

Have you ever replaced the recall external relay? They are known to go bad. Usually can get a new one for around $9.

Have you gone back to the dealer and asked them to verify the recall is working?

I haven't posted in this thread for awhile, but as an update: I was having stalling issues (on startup) as well. I thought it was possibly the fuel relay or something else to do with the whackadoo TIPM recall fix...but it turned out to be a dying alternator, and replacing that fixed it. Some other odd problems I had been having (windshield wipers turning on when I used the turn signal, for example) which I had attributed to the TIPM also ceased after the alternator replacement.

Hope that info can help some people

Interesting, mine has just started stalling after pressing start only a couple of times in the past month or two. And when cold my wipers come on when I but on the turn signal, Bit only when really cold outside. Got 160k on mine

My wife's 2011 WK2 Laredo has had the same stalls after start feature for several years now.

Quick work-around: Pop the start button out, insert the key, then cycle the key on-off, then on. The Jeep starts and behaves. We've traced the problem to a key fob sold to us defective by a certain dealer in Baytown,TX.

Only happens with the Baytown key fob, the wife's fob works fine. A replacement, replacement fob is expensive enough I just pop the start button out and insert the key fob when I use the car.

However....if the car cranks but won't start and won't quit cranking, (been there done that), it's the fuel pump relay, which is under recall.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks for that, I have tried the key from the fob in the key only area by removing the push button. Did not solve my stall on start or stall while driving just using the key, did that method for couple months, did continue with the stalls. I have had the fuel pump relay recall done and even bought another relay to see if that's what is was but, no. Just came back from the store had a stall on start in the parking lot 10 minutes ago

Thanks Capt,

I have had to do that a number of times when it gets funky. It only happens 10% or less of the time so I am not sure and won't really worry about it

Very sad, got a text from a reliable Chrysler factory source, all their going to do is replace the relay again on this second recall, hope that is not true. I've put in two brand new relays to see if that was causing the stall. It did NOT fix the stall

Took my re recall letter to local dealer. He reads a few lines and says, no parts are available and no idea when FCA does not have a fix. Wait for another letter and then call us. In meantime hope your life is save in the death trap (my words). What a joke hope others considering Chrysler think long a hard about buying this product. So, I'm in the Jeep hoping I survive to get the re re recall letter
