Start Stop

I'm looking at a 2016 Overland HA and I like everything about it except the Start Stop thing. I don't know if I'll ever get used to shutting down and restarting all the time. Seems to be something that would shorten the life of starter and battery as well. I know that there is a manual override, but it has to be done every time you initially start. I would much rather change the default to off. Anyone know if that can be done? Also, the ones that I have looked at had a 20" wheel design that was the same as the 2013 Overland's(only black) with the more sculpted spokes. I liked the 2014-15 Altitude and Overland wheels with the more solid looking 5 spokes better. Do all the HA's come through with the earlier style wheels? I've seen pictures that look like HA's with the '14-'15 rims, I think.
Thanks

Re: Start Stop

The ESS 3.6L comes with an additional 130A auxiliary AGM battery in addition to the normal 650A AGM battery. The starter is a more HD version and is rated for 2 million starts. Shouldn't be a problem.

All I care about is that ESS can be turned off... I don't care whether I have to press a button every time I start it or whether FCA or a third party comes up with a software mod to keep it shut off. Having to press a button becomes automatic after a while... you'll do it without even thinking about it.

Yes, it looks like the 20 inch HA wheel is slightly different from the 20's on my 14 Overland. If you watch the white HA driving video on U-Toob those black HA wheels flash a little when rolling. Looks kinda cool.

Re: Start Stop

I bet to satisfy CAFE requirements, features like start/stop must default to on to be factored in the fuel economy ratings. Sort of like how MDS is on by default unless you use sport mode.

Some manufacturers, like BMW, can change the auto start/stop to be off every time. But from the factory, it defaults to on every time. I don't believe Chrysler even knows of such a thing.

Re: Start Stop

Do all '16 trims and engines have this ESS "feature"?

Re: Start Stop

Start/Stop is fine. I have an MY15 KL which has it and initially, I hated it. I would turn it off at the beginning of every drive cycle. But after about 6 months, I thought, I really should give it a go - give it the benefit of the doubt if you will, so I left it on and am quite used to it now (16 months of ownership).

You can manage it quite successfully by 'feathering' the accelerator (if you choose not to hit the button in the centre stack to turn it off).

When you do allow it to do its thing, it really is a sub-second restart - maybe .8 of a second (?) - my 12 year son timed it one day.

You get used to it. It is as unobtrusive as I would imagine they could possibly make it. It's really no big deal.

We've decided to replace the MY14 GC with the '17 GC whenever that arrives in Aust and I'm quite looking forward to comparing the feature between the Grand and the KL. If it works exactly like the KL, then I will be happy.

I commend you are your adaptability. I imagine if you were in a traffic jam, inching along you could just disable it.

Only the 3.6L Pentastar equipped GC's have it.
