Steering

When I had my 2011 Laredo E with the 17" wheels and Goodyear Fortera tires, the steering was nice and tight. With my 2014 Limited with the 18" wheels and Michelin Latitude tires, the steering seems a little looser. Most noticeably, while city driving the steering wheel seems to move more freely as the tires roll over an uneven section of the road. Difference in tires?

Re: Steering

2014 v6 has electrically assisted steering. Your 11 had hydraulic. That is probably the source of the difference in steering feel you are noticing.

I thought the only difference was that they use an electric motor to drive the hydraulic pump, instead of running a belt to a pulley on the motor. The steering is still a hydraulic assisted rack and opinion.

If that is wrong, could somebody explain how the steering works?

Re: Steering

I'm not sure if the Jeep electric assist still has hydraulics or not, but even then, one would think pressure is not always on like a conventional belt driven system otherwise you would not get the MPG gain. Did a search and can't find any specifics on the Jeep system.

Although, the plot thickens on if the 2011s had electric... Electric steering pump

Here is a comparison of the BMW systems for reference on steering feel:

for what it's worth...
