Steering pulling, even after alignment. Now severe shimmy.

I'm curious as to anyone's thoughts on an issue I have been having. A few weeks ago I noticed i was pulling a bit to the left. Also noticed some abnormal vibration/"shimmying" in the steering. Made a mental note and at my next oil change/tire rotate, went and got an alignment done. The pulling seemed to be corrected but then only after about a day or two it was back. Now has progressively gotten worse for the last 2 weeks.

At low speeds (10mph and under) the wheel will literally dance back and forth, at least 20degrees back and forth, if i don't have my hands firmly on the wheel to correct.

At high speeds, it just feels like very bad vibration in the steering, which i think i can also feel under my feet. The pull is so bad, i can make fairly decent left curves without steering. If i am on a straight road and i were to leave my hands off the wheel. I would have changed lanes to my left wishing a few seconds.

I have an appt tomorrow with a shop to have it looked at. The reason i am curious as to what this may be is because the shop i am taking it to did repairs to my jeep when i was rear-ended almost a year ago. They use only OEM and also have a lifetime warranty on any of their parts or work that was done for the repair. I am wondering/hoping if this may be something residual from the accident. (There was over 28k in repairs done)

Could be a broken belt in a tire.

Interesting, i never even considered this. Could a quick, easy way for me to help determine would be to rotate front tires to rear and see if the issue changes?

After thinking about Bill's statement, i went and made a closer inspection of the tires. Here is what the front driver side tire looked like:

So now i wonder if this is caused the steering and wobbling issue...or vice-versa

Yikes. Put your spare on and see if it is better. I wouldn't drive on that tire.

Inspecting tires "should" be one of the first things they should do before starting an alignment. I don't know how they missed this.

Good call Bill. Belt had gone in that tire. Replaced and all is well. Thank you for the help!

Glad it worked out. Many, many years ago I managed a Firestone store. I got very familiar with broken belts.

Glad that worked out. Sounds like that tires was trashed inside and out!! I know you got an alignment, but I would still monitor the tires and see how they wear, either that or maybe just have them re-check the alignment now that you have new tires so the same thing doesn't potentially happen to those.
