Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

The GC's suspension is fairly "soft" in comparison to a lot of vehicles out there. What's happening is that on uneven bumps (affecting one front wheel more than the other, even if just for a moment) the more affected wheel rises first (or falls first--it works both ways). The suspension travels quite a bit (and this will be somewhat more pronounced with the air suspension...but it affects any of them) and as it does so, the steering linkage moves through an arc, effectively getting a little shorter or longer (depending on the situation). This pushes or pulls the affected wheel creating a force vector. Since the other side is attached through the steering rack, it gets the opposite (pull or push).

The net effect is a quick, momentary jerk of the steering wheel (it's very slight but can look amplified) followed by a reversal as the suspension stabilizes. It looks like a "jiggle" and will generally only occur on significant bumps or "sharp" ones that bounce the suspension significantly (and note: even seemingly insignificant bumps can do this at higher speeds or depending on how they are approached).

Vehicles with stiffer suspensions, or with less travel generally don't experience this as much.

Also, some steering systems have feedback dampers to try to limit this behavior. The GC doesnt.

Tech1, I'll keep you up to date, going to get an oil change in 1k miles and I'll have them take a look.

PeterK, thanks for the explanation. I agree with you it's really only 'bad' when one wheel hits a bump.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

Hi Guys,

Wanted to update everyone on my steering wheel movement over bumps which in my case also includes vibration / shimming over 65. Anyhow had multiply visit to the dealer trying to solve this and even contacted Jeep customer service. Dealer has balance wheels and check all steering and suspension components, and will not help me anymore they claim it's normal and vehicle is operating as it was design to do.

I have to say this left me disappointed in my first Jeep purchase experience, not sure if I will own another. If anyone finds a way in improving on this issue please post.

I'm considering upgrading my sway bars to the SRT ones and changing out shocks to Bilstein a couple of members have done this saying it really tightens
things up, not sure if it would help us or make things worse.

Any constant shimmy and vibration in the steering wheel on smooth highway road surfaces is not normal. Just because a shop or dealer has a road force balancer doesnt mean they know how to use it properly. I went though alot with the shaking tires and moving to a dealer that knew how to properly road force balance fixed it. Try a different dealer with road force balancer.
The tires could also be out of round and need replaced, i only went 10k on my stock tires before i decided they were garbage and replaced them.
Concerning the feedback in the steering wheel over bumps unfortunately that seems to be just a characteristic of the suspension, mine does that as others i have driven also do.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

Hello,

I know it's an old post but did anybody find out a solution for this issue?
I drive a 2013 V6 3.0 GC and I noticed that problem is worse if you change the rim offset. I tried SRT8 rims and the bump steer increases. Honestly I think the front steering/suspension system of the GC is not well designed. For me the pivot axle (French term, don't know if you use the same expression in English) is not crossing the middle of the rim. Unfortunately alignment cannot change anything. This means the knuckle is the main problem and should be redesigned; as result of this bad part you can feel vibration and/or bump steer. Just for curiosity, recently I drove a 2016 brand new overland GC and the vibration/bump steer is still there. For information I saw on this vehicle that Jeep has replaced the intermediate driveshaft bearing but a bearing cannot resolve this king of issue. Now I don't know how is the steering behavior on a SRT8. I'm also thinking to install a steering damper on the rack but the place is limited. I'm wondering if Jeep will replace the steering/suspension system on the 2017 GC. Thanks in advance for your replies...
