Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

This is a 2014 JGC Overland (air suspension). Lately (although it might have been doing it before) I've noticed that when going over pavement irregularities at moderate speed I get a "jiggle" in the steering wheel. Sharp bumps (not big ones, just sharp) will sometimes/often cause a quick back-and-forth jiggle in the wheel. Also, when going over undulating roads the steering wheel will track back and forth with the undulations at times.

Its rather annoying on semi-rough roads as the wheel will not stay steady. Has anyone else had/seen this issue? I've driven a couple of others and haven't really noticed it on them to any degree but would appreciate anyone's feedback as to how theirs seems to be under these circumstances. Everything looks good underneath and around the suspension.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

You are describing exactly the issue I am trying to shake out (no pun intended) in my 2013.

Mine was in an accident, and the steering shake was the first thing I noticed after getting it back from the body shop, since the rental did not exhibit this trait. The body shop and service department both test drove it and said the shake was normal. They fully inspected the front end and did not find anything wrong with my steering rack or front suspension.

I have since found the below posts describing this issue on other WK2s, one of them a 2014. At this point my opinion is that the steering intermediate shaft and/or shaft bearing are at fault for this negative feedback characteristic.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

I'm not so sure the steering shaft or bearing would be responsible for something like this. I'm thinking alignment...

I have owned 3 Overlands with air suspension and they all have done this over rough pavement.

My 2014 V8 Limited did this too.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

I was thinking about this today while driving over some rough roads. Although it seems to be normal ( as I have had three that have done it ) why does it do it? They may all do it but I think it is more with the air suspension models.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

I've wondered that too. On mine the road doesn't necessarily have to be very rough. Sometimes an expansion joint will cause a small jiggle as an example.

I have driven lots of vehicles and only a few (that didn't have a problem) have ever done this normally. I'm wondering if it's related to the "softness" of the air suspension as I've seen similar "jiggling" in vehicles when the shocks are going (and getting soft)...

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

My Limited without air suspension did this too. I can only surmise it has something to do with the steering geometry. It bothered me a little a first but I got used to it.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

I've had this issue for many months. I don't remember this problem when it was new for the first year or 2. I have a 2012 Overland Hemi with air suspension. I did some reading and it sounds like it might be what is called "bump steer" and that tie rods may not be aligned on the front suspension to cause this. I think it's a problem. It didn't use to do this and no other vehicle I've been in have I ever noticed this situation on undulating pavement or when hitting a bump, that the steering wheel would move so noticeably.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

I have a 2015 GC Altitude and it does this but not near as bad as my previous
Toyota tacoma's they are horrible to a point where it's unsafe in my opinion. So
I'm not sure I'm going to get dealer involve, but I also noticed on a couple rare occasions steering wheel shake at 70 + on freeway. Once again the Tacoma's
have a serious issue with this too in my opinion.

So I feel my 2015 GC is a huge step forward in a more positive direction, I'm
currently at 6100 miles with really no issues.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

My 2014 JGC limited V-8 does this as well. When I know certain bumps are coming I hold the steering wheel tighter. Anyone know why or have a idea how to fix. I'm still under warranty so it'd be nice to take care of it if there is actually a problem.

Re: Steering wheel jiggles over bumps

I think if your going to have dealer have them look at alignment and possible the intermittent steering shaft. It wouldn't hurt while they have it on a rack to do a complete check of all suspension components. Some vehicles are worse some are better, my wife's Kia is good on rough roads, but with that said the steering is really tight and un-responsive to the road kinda num is how I would describe it.

let me know how this turns out for you.

Jon

PS I believe they call this bump steer.
