Of course the front and rear axles are allowed to rotate at different speed when the centre diff is not locked - but if the front and rear diff ratios were different it would be pointless because only one axle would get all of the drive and the other would effectively be "pulled" along by the momentum of the vehicle (just as one wheel is pulled along quicker when going around a corner). May as well be a 2wd in that case. Unless the centre diff had 2 different ratios - one for front and one for rear...
Thanks Brett. I've amended my post.

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

Wow, and here I thought I was alone in this world! I have read with interest all these posts regarding this topic and happy to see a resolution is potentially not far off.

I have just experienced the exact same problem with my new 2012 GC. On the beach at Moreton Island off the coast of Brisbane, Australia. Heavy sand conditions and 'bing', the SERV 4WD light comes on and I lose the front 2 wheels. Bogged pretty quick.

After getting pulled out and towed for 20 mins, the warning lights all disappeared and 4WD was back in business. Unhooked from towing and ran 4WD for about 20 mins and then the ESC Malfuntion light came on, but stayed engaged in 4WD.

After a night of sitting, tried the beach again, but didn't make it more than a few hundred meters before the SERV 4WD came on again.

My GC is in with Jeep Service for a second time in a week after they said 'nothing wrong with it'. Keen to see if they have any progress or have read posts like this. I see them tomorrow and will be showing them these threads.

Generally then, we are all waiting on a Software patch that should fix this, correct? Is it just to do with ESC being disabled when in SAND/MUD? Is it that simple? I thought this the case anyways as it shows ESC OFF when you switch to any 4WD mode.

Thanks again for the posts. It gives me hope that I might take my Luxury 4x4 of the year out onto the sand again...

Hey Surfer peck.
I was at Moreton a couple of months ago and luckily did not have the issue there. However I did have it once (at Double Island Point) after having to hit the brakes really hard to avoid a rogue wave. Apparently the ABS system activating is the cause of the problem (details in "sand = FAIL" thread). It can happen in any mode (auto, sand/mud, etc)...

I just got off the phone with my dealer and he confirmed, yes the software patch is freely available (and there was no mention of "beta" or "trial"). There is a catch - even though the problem can occur with any wk2 GC he said that the patch is currently only available for vehicles with air suspension (lucky I've got this). Apparently Chrysler are working on the software patch for steel suspension models.

Anyway I'll be testing this new software on the sand next week!

The dealer didn't say what the TSB number is (if any). I'm booked in for next Tuesday so will confirm after thst and report back unless someone else has the details...

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

2012 overland CRD, same problem on fraser Is the other week. serv 4wd etc, lost front wheel drive, drove with rear drive 10 minlater back in 4wd no probs since but no sand. Booked in again to have checked this time with direction to dealer from chrysler. requested car for 3 days.
Anyone had the banging noise when the suspension tops out full travel, really off putting when driving in undulating dunes.

Hey Yammie - does that mean you've already had the software patch and it did not work?

I've also noticed the suspension top out at the highest setting. I really would have felt more comfortable with the extra height in some of the deep sand tracks on Fraser, but the topping out noise really put me off, so I went to the OR1 height setting (default sand mode setting) wherever possible.

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

I asked the dealer to download the patch but they said there was nothing available and had not heard of the issue. After I emailed chrysler the dealer phoned for the car to come in for the fix.

Can I ask what dealer you are going through?
Why do they need your car for 3 days?

Good question - I understand the software patch takes just a few minutes to apply.

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

An update on the diff ratio thing discussed earlier. The WK2 data page Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Maintenance information and schedules has been updated clarifying the 3L CRD ratios. Front is 3.45:1 (195mm), back is 3.47:1 (230mm) without ELSD or 3.45:1 (230mm) with ELSD.
