The front ABS works particularly hard during sand operation since this Jeep does not have a conventional or even electronic locking front differential.
It uses the brakes to achieve traction control.
Because of this, I think the control module can not always cope with all the information it receives. Maybe it just gets overloaded and shuts down.

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

I just checked in with my service manager this morning regarding the TSB. I've been waiting for an official fix for nearly a year (I reported my problem to the dealership in March 2012) and keep getting the "it's coming, it's coming" line. The latest he's telling me is that it should be out any day, he says his field tech told him it would be out around the first of this year.

Please everyone, I need a TSB number as soon as available. There is no way I will be able to convince the dealer without an official TSB.
They say that they are not aware of any problems with the 4WD system.
18th is getting very close!

I tried this. Chrysler told me to contact my dealers service centre and the service centre will advise me if my Jeep is an affected model. I contacted the service centre and they knew nothing about the issue. I read the Chrysler response from the article in 4x4 mag, and the dealer said that if there is a software patch (which is what the article stated), it will show up when they connect the Jeeps computer system to their diagnostics system.

Unfortunately what they have done will only show up related TSB's, and there is no official TSB for this issue yet. I had a similar issue to you, originally my dealer checked the vehicle and said nothing was available. Only after speaking with Chrysler HQ in Melbourne did I get the fix. Shona seems to be the best contact there, read the posts immediately surrounding this link for the full story: Grand Cherokee + sand = FAIL

Not sure what the story is in Dubai, but when others have contacted Chrysler here in Australia the trick is to make sure you speak to someone in customer support who is aware of the issue and the fix. If they play ignorant, perhaps direct them to the Australian contact mentioned in the link in the post above ^^^

Sounds reasonable.

However, I thought that since it is basically organized by the Jeep distributor here in Dubai that it might be worth a try and to see what happens. They are going for some kind of record I believe expecting more than 500 entries!

I will keep you updated of the outcome. Could be very interesting!
I hope there will be a lot of WK2s at the Dubai Jamboree. If they don't know about the issue now, they sure will by the end of the Jambo.

This is something I dont understand. You look at 4WD enthusiasts in the UAE, and they all do a lot of sand work. So you'd expect that they would be most vocal about the problem. But I've seen very little from them on it.

It will be an interesting scenario if they do get a stack of GC's bogging down. But it will be even more interesting if they dont, because we'll want to know why.

At Jeep Service at the moment. They are still treating the issues as isolated. They don't acknowledge knowing anything about the 4WD failures in sand. Busy scanning it now...

Very interesting!
They eventually admitted to being aware of the problem. At first they said that TSB 08-034-12 solves the problem. On further discussion they admitted that they sometimes still have problems. Apparently they have applied TSB 21-008-11 to some costumers vehicles with this problem and it SEEMS to solve the problem.
The issue is that it is not for the QDII system. So we are now discussing if they can basically also apply 21-008-11 to my Overland.
Will keep you posted
