Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

Got it checked at the local service centre. They confirmed that this is a known issue and at least 4 vehicles have reported the same problem in the area. Sand driving seems to be the precipitant in all these cases and apparently Jeep has identified the software glitch (absolving me in that process...yayy) . I am told that Chrysler has developed the fix and is currently testing it and the service man asked me to ring back in 4 weeks !

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

I live on long island and spend at lest 3 full days a week on the beach fishing with my 2001 GCL.

in the last 1 1/2 weeks i helped get two 2012 Jeep GC out, and i mean buried deep in sand up to the running boards.

one of the two didn't air down but even after airing down and digging out it got stuck again.

no second shifter, one front wheel and one rear wheel spun.

he said it was engaged all the time???? sounds like all wheel to me???

not knowing the truck after he almost got washed out to sea, i told him to leave the beach and read a little before he tries again.

the first guy ran through a menu but still couldn't find a way to engage or disengage 4 wheel.

anyone know how to engage the 4 wheel drive so next time and there will be a next time with as many jeeps we have on the island i will know how to check.

I'm not stupid i have been 4 wheeling four over 15 years and there were at least 8 different truck owners trying to figure it out.

not good for jeep if this is a common problem.

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

Jeep has 9 4WD/AWD systems. Different strokes for different models. See Official Jeep website.

You do not engage it on a wk or wk2 it is full time 4wd. The transfer engages as it is needed.

JK - it seems these guys had little or no experience on sand. As you can see from the attached high range is nothing more than an AWD system. When in soft sand you need to put it into low to lock the centre diff. (Obviously airing down the tyres is mandatory)

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

We picked up our GC through the week, so this weekend being the first weekend with our new baby, we thought we'd take him for a ride to the beach!
So, we got to the beach, aired down the tyres to 16psi, stuck the selec terrain into SAND/MUD mode, and off we went. The vehicle was performing effortlessly until about 5 minutes down the beach, the SERV 4WD light came on. My heart sank (I've read about this problem on the forums prior to receiving the vehicle). I acted quickly, keeping in mind that the wet sand and momentum is what is going to save me here, and managed to get us off the beach without a tow. The "SERV 4WD" and "Service air suspesion" messages stayed on until we got back onto bitumen. Then everything went back to normal. I'm SOOOOOOOOOO frustrated and disheartened that this happened.
I'm going to book the car in for inspection this week. I will keep you all informed.

Took my Jeep in today to get looked at - they just rang and said they did a software update which has fixed the problem. I only took delivery of the car last week, so I think it's pretty slack they didn't update the software before delivery!
Guess I won't know if it has fixed the problem until I take it on the beach this weekend!!

Re: STUCK IN SAND with 4WD malfunction

It's the latest TSB 08-034-12 which apparently fixes the problem. I'll let you know how I go on the weekend

That one's listed as fixing an air suspension issue, which must have occurred in your case. Stil curious about the 4WD Serv error though.

I hope it's all good for you in the end.

Did the techie confirm that this update would fix the '4wd serv' error as well ?

Yes, apparently is has to do with inconsistent data received from the ABS module. Tomorrow when we're on the beach will be the real test...
Will let you know how I go
