Unhappy Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

I just received a notice from FCA yesterday stating that there is a new recall for the sun visor. NHTSA 15V-879 is listed on my MOPAR owners account as incomplete. The previous recall 14V-391 is listed as complete.
Seeing as there is a different number attached to the recall, I assume there is a recall on the recall? IIRC, there was at least on member here that had a fire after the first "fix" was done.

If my search skills suck and there is an existing thread on this recall redux, let me know and kill this one.

Thanks!

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

It isn't to redo anything, it covers older Jeeps than the last one, and will include those that didn't get it done yet on the first recall.

"SUMMARY:
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2013 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured December 3, 2009, to September 1, 2012. In the affected vehicles, the wiring for the vanity lamp in the sun visor may short circuit, after having been remedied for a prior recall for the vanity lamp wiring. This recall is also addressing certain vehicles that have not been remedied under that prior recall."

No, I don't think that is correct. My 2011 had the recall for this problem done once already a year or so ago and this is a new recall for the same problem...even the vehicles that DID get it done on the first recall.

I did notice that new recall said 2011 through 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. My wife's 2014 also had the recall done for the vanity mirror wiring about the same time as my 2011, but apparently it is not being RE-recalled.

Got my notice Tuesday. It was waiting in the mailbox when I brought my 2015 Chevy 3500 HD back from the dealer for a recall to put some Loctite on the brake pedal pivot bolt and re-torque it. Between 2 Grand Cherokees and my new truck, I spend a lot of time at dealerships.

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

My dealer says it's an improved repair for the wiring vs last years recall.

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

I read it as a more permanent or better fix than the previous one. My notice told me to wait for another recall letter on this in the near future with further instructions. Parts for the recall are not ready yet. Until then I guess I will just cross my fingers and hope my GC doesn't burst into flames.

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

I got the same re-recall notice myself. Have you read the procedure that the mechanic must go through to fix this? This will be the second time they will be tearing the interior apart, can't imagine that it will cause any rattles/looseness to occur (ha-ha). This is worse than the half-assed fix for the TIPM recall. Oh well, I guess it's better than a fire, as long as it doesn't occur between now and whenever they finally come up with a solution (again) sometime later this year.

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

Bulldog, I had the first one done with no problems at all. No squeaks, rattles or finger prints. Hopefully I have such luck with the next one. The TIPM fix was actually the RIGHT way to do it IMO- a heavy duty relay with insulated wiring securely mounted to the body. I was surprised it was done well. I've built several Jeeps and motorcycles using similar procedures for auxiliary devices.

It is to correct the first recall and to expand it apparently.

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

how about this confusing mix of communications regarding all this....

The initial recall, P36, was updated 8/15 with:

"NOTE: The service procedure to repair vehicles involved in this recall has been modified. A new tape procedure has been added, new parts have been added to the parts section and the labor time allowance has been increased."

This appears to be a fix for the faulty fix?

But then this P71 shows up and only some are getting it? Yet the dealer/press recall communication guide attached says P71 is for '11-'14 but P71 only shows on the NHTSA website when you search '11-'13...searched my '14 Summit VIN and it doesn't pull R71.

here are the '13 NHTSA recall hits...

2013 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE | Safercar | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

If you want to do your own searches go here and input your VIN or year model info. Here's the starting NHTSA recall search page. When you search '14 the P36 is there with 23 documents, I did not drill into them but it does not contain the recall guide.

Keeping You Safe | Safercar | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Oh and the R71 NHTSA recall report (updated) says, "** FCA US expects parts to be available in Q4 2016." niiice

Re: Sun Visor Recall...AGAIN?

I'm glad I checked the forum. I got the notice and thought I already had this done so I threw it away not knowing that this was a second recall on the same item. Thanks for posting ... I will have to pay more attention in the future.
