If mine had exploded, I might be tempted to file a NHTSA complaint.

Seriously??

I'm sure the NHTSA's response would be... it was tempered glass... you're welcome!

Re: Sunroof Explosion

Glad you got this handled and got your money back. This is crazy and one of my fears of having the large sunroof. I enjoy it and the light shining through, but if it shatters with the shade open, oh boy.

What's surprising to me is that OP has the small normal sunroof. I would have expected it more so to happen with the panoramic sunroof.

Sunroof Explosion

I honestly if I could I would get rid of that option. I have it and also I had it on my previous car I don't see a use for it. To loud driving with it open. I keep it closed and shade on so it does't bake my head.

The only use that I'm getting out of it is "vent mode" when I go to the beach so the interior doesn't get damaged when the car turns into sola powered oven on hot days. I could keep the windows ajar and get the same like most people do.

The other use if I have my bikes or kayak on the roof so I can check on it. Also, kids seem to enjoy it when it rains.

This happened to my Dad. He had a 2011 with the regular sunroof. The thing just shattered out of nowhere when he was on the highway. His was outside of warranty anyway so he had to just pay for it. The thing that really sucked is the dealership did not get all the broken pieces of glass out of the tracks and the roof never worked right again.

Re: Sunroof Explosion

Hmmmmm, never occurred to me that a sunroof could just explode, the biggest plus(other than winning your money back) is no one was hurt.Has me concerned as my '11 has a pano roof.Never had issues with it and use it frequently, but will eye it with caution in future.
Doing what another on this thread mentioned,I did read and was shocked there have been so many sunroof issues from many different car manufacturers. From incorrect install in manufacture process to flawed glass.i noted that on pano roofs that if the frame is mounted incorrectly it's a ticking bomb just waiting to go off.Others noted, especially on standard sunroofs(whatever "standard" means) the fault invariably is in "tension" or "contact points" of frame to glass or frame to body causing "high tensile vibration"(who writes these terms?wouldnt lay mans words be better for owners?),that results in an "inevitable terminal glass failure".
Now I have a headache reading various web pages, just glad my sunroof is in one piece.
Think I will keep a golf ball in my car and blame it on my local golf club!!!
I AM JOKING about the local golf club,so please ,no nasty comments!

Re: Sunroof Explosion

Yeah, happened to my '12 last spring, or maybe the fall before. I have the pano roof but it was just the moving part that shattered. I have glass coverage with my insurance so I just called and it was replaced in my driveway without any charge to me.

Still shocked the hell out of me when it happened. Glad I had the shade closed.
