Sunroof Explosion

So this happened to me a month after I got my car. It happened in Novermber. My brand new 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 700 miles on it shattered exploded out of no where. With Dash Cam footage showing I wasn't near dump trucks or tailgating anyone at 11:00 at night. I took my car to the dealer, feeling terrible about what I knew they were going to say, "Not covered by warranty." So when we got there, they were very rude and said it was not covered and there is nothing they can do. So what to do now? we paid 1000 dollars for a new sunroof on a brand new car because they "don't cover glass." Well we took them to small claims court in Mississippi. What are the odds of Chrysler-Fiat Automobiles showing up in small claims court in south Mississippi over 1000 dollars? Well I prepared as if they were. I got all my warranty information straight. Which clearly stated "front and rear windows are excluded from warranty when acted on by an external force." My sunroof was not busted by an external force. I had my dash cam footage and had all the bills for rental car and a new sunroof. Turns out I didn't need anything, they never showed up and we won the court case and got our 1000 dollars back.

Moral of the story, if you've been screwed over on some bullcrap like that. Sue in small claims court in your area. Chrysler won't show up unlike your local stealership who more then likely will show up. Now don't be ridiculous but don't let yourself be bullied!

By any chance, did you ping Jeep Cares when your dealer tried to BS you?

I can't imagine anything other than a meteorite, a dead goose, or hunk of blue ice that could explode a sun roof that didn't have pre-existing assembly issues.

Too be 100 percent honest with you. No I didn't. I didn't want to stir up to much with them. Because I didn't want them to side with the dealer and tell their agent of process in Mississippi to go to court because they will know they will win. I was just trying to get it all done and finalized with the least amount of publicity possible if that makes sense.

Re: Sunroof Explosion

My understanding is that glass is covered for first 12,000 miles. But that might just be for the windshield. Thank you for sharing with us.

Re: Sunroof Explosion

Just want to point out that exploding sunroofs is not an isolated incident. The federal government is looking into this and its with different manufacturers. If you google this, you will find a bunch of stories on it like this:

Re: Sunroof Explosion

Interesting story. I have actually heard of this kind of thing happening out of the blue and for no apparent reason. I assume most likely due to defective glass or something.

It is more likely the sunroof was installed in a way the glass was under stress. The type of safety glass is designed to shatter into little pieces to avoid major injury. When I was in insurance claims, we paid for them and recovered from the manufacturers if the vehicle was under warranty. That way our customers didn't have the hassle of going to court.

Comprehensive claims like this aren't a chargeable incident against the insured, so the were happy even if we didn't recover.

Re: Sunroof Explosion

There was an issue with Kia Sorentos with the large panorama sunroofs' imploding.

Re: Sunroof Explosion

Wouldn't something like this be covered under your insurance? Just like a rock to the windshield?

You may have to pay a small deductible, but it would be worth it not to have to take the time & trouble with small claims.

My guess is somewhere deep down in the fine print you signed something that says they aren't covering the sunroof. FCA like all major corporations have huge legal departments dreaming up every possible liability and protecting themselves wherever possible.
