Sunroof / headliner rattle

So, just a note: after 3 trips to my dealer for troubleshooting on a sunroof (pano) creak, I've isolated it to the headliner and have shamefully fixed it with a rolled up piece of t-shirt in the headliner. Can't wait to go back Monday and show them this and see if they can fix with some foam blocks. Neat. I've tried Velcro strips, foam spacers, and leave it to the shirt to fix it. Happily driving quiet now, but perplexed at the number of rattles in this truck.

Is is a rattle or a squeak? What location did you stuff the tee shirt?

It's more of a rattle, or a shutter, over bumps at medium speed. It's the sunroof shade rattling in the track that lines the cover up when it opens and closes on the screw drive. Actually putting the tshirt in there and now subsequently removing it after a day has caused the rattle to temporarily go away. If it returns, I'm planning to use a few blocks of high density foam to alleviate it.

I put the shirt in the rear passenger corner. Just rolled up about half a shirt (cut it down the arms) and put it in between the headliner and the frame.

Re: Sunroof / headliner rattle

Rattle has returned. Went to Lowes last night and picked up a 6 foot piece of copper pipe wrap - the kind that is split lengthwise. I opted for the rubber-ish kind over the foam kind. A whole $4.50. I will cut about a 10" piece and install up in the right rear sunroof frame area. No more tshirts and this will be a permanent fix.

Sad to say this Jeep has rattled a lot and I've had to tackle a lot of these, but I think this is the last.

I can post pictures if anyone would like. Just let me know. Thanks!

Re: Sunroof / headliner rattle

If it's no trouble I'd like to see a picture to show where you are putting the padding. I've been trying to find a rattle in my Pano roof and it may be the same issue as I've already checked all the clips.

I thought I had a rattle on my sunroof. Turned out to be my rear plate making the rattle noise. Made a few adjustments to it and no more rattle. In the end I'm quite glad that was the issue and I did not need to go to the dealer for it.

Re: Sunroof / headliner rattle

Hey guys. Dark_Shadow- good idea. I did check that. That drove me nuts on a 4Runner I once owned and it turned out to be that. Crazy.

Here are the photos. This is the right rear of the roof as you can tell, and the piece that I cut is about 12" long. The key, I've found, is getting it between the frame edge of the sunshade and the roof of the truck. You'll notice a little bend at the back and that seems key. I do not know how far forward this needs to be - probably not much if the noise is right at the back edge where the shade frame starts. I'll start cutting this back a bit to see.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if this works for you.

Re: Sunroof / headliner rattle

Thanks for the pictures. I'll see if that is where my rattle is coming from.

Re: Sunroof / headliner rattle

ABORT. THIS MAY CAUSE YOUR SUNROOF NOT TO OPEN.

I.E.- when you retract the roof, the foam insulation will get in the way and get pushed back, or to the side. Oops. Strike 1 for me. Sorry guys. Still investigating. Mine may be in the heavy duty Velcro holding up the headliner. More to come...

Re: Sunroof / headliner rattle

I cannot believe this sunroof rattle problem is still going on and the Dealers seems so clueless about it.

My 2012 had this issue too. I remember looking at it and finding the problem within 2 minutes. It was the plastic velcro clips mounting into the body. Fixed with a small felt shim (at least in my case). It would only rattle below or above certain temperatures though.

Do people who work for Chrysler even bother to read boards like this to help isolate problems? There seems to be a new thread regarding this issue daily since 2010. I would think someone who works for Chrysler actually drives one of these things and is like us and reads these boards would clue in someone at Chrysler.
