Synthetic Oil and Your Warranty - Dealer Nonsense

Now topping the list of ridiculous things that I've heard from the Chrysler service department: Since Chrysler doesn't recommend the use of synthetic oil with the 5.7l engine, if you have an engine malfunction while using it they will void your warranty.

Silly me! I figured that I would be in the clear as long as I chose a motor oil that complied with MS-6395. I guess I'm just lucky that the synthetic Royal Purple oil I've been using hasn't caused my JGC to blow up yet.

I wonder, has Chrysler offered a verdict on the after-market air in my tires yet?

Don't ever go back to that uneducated service advisor. From page 601 of the 2015 Grand Cherokee owner's manual (page may vary on prior year manuals):
Synthetic Engine Oils
You may use synthetic engine oils provided the recommended oil quality requirements are met, and the recommended maintenance intervals for oil and filter changes are followed.

Re: Synthetic Oil and Your Warranty - Dealer Nonsense

Greetings,

I properly will switch over to Synthetic Oil on my next change. My service dealer of course will charge me extra. With the aftermarket air, my dealer is waiting for more nitro capsules to come in.

It seams that I hear a lot of complaints about the Long Island centers. So far, the only one I heard any good things about is East Hills.

Best for now.

Yup...your dealer's service representative is "very misinformed". As rubicon' points out...it's addressed right in the darn manual. Sheesh...

Re: Synthetic Oil and Your Warranty - Dealer Nonsense

I've also heard good things about East Hills. I take my JGC to the Bayside dealership and I like them a lot overall. They've always been courteous, prompt, and professional. This is the first questionable thing I've heard from them. It probably reflects more on the individual who said it than it does the service department.

Worse than misinformed... upgrading dealer oil changes to full synth is I suspect a modest boost in profits for the service departments.

Re: Synthetic Oil and Your Warranty - Dealer Nonsense

Have the New York dealers caught onto to the express lane oil changes yet or are they still having people make appointments weeks in advance?

Speaking of oil changes...

At how many miles would you suggest I take it in for the first oil change?

Re: Synthetic Oil and Your Warranty - Dealer Nonsense

Most people would say I'm throwing money away, but I always change a new engine's oil at 1000 miles. None of my cars burn any oil, even at 100k.

Now there's a loaded question...

I'm of the school that it's best to "break-in" a new engine with conventional oil (non-synthetic)...which is what your new Grand Cherokee comes with, then after 5,000 miles, perform your first oil/filter change...making the switch over to full synthetic oil...and every 5,000 miles after going forward.

I also like to save money, so I buy the least expensive synthetic oil I can (Mobil 1), and I purchase Mopar oil filters online...performing the oil change myself of course. Could I go longer than 5,000 miles per oil change using synthetic...sure...I could spend even MORE money having the oil analyzed to determine a more exact oil change interval, but why bother? NO brand of synthetic oil will breakdown completely in our Grand Cherokees within 6 months/5,000 miles...even if you tow a lot, so spending more money on other expensive brands of oil is a waste IMO...especially on a daily commuter vehicle.

Mobil 1, 5w20 - 6 qts about $36 (5 qt container at Walmart for less than $27)

Mopar 3.6L oil filter - about $9 each on eBay...including shipping

Labor - $0

You have just asked a question that will generate a lot of opinions, pretty much unencumbered by fact or expert advice from the folks who designed your engine.
Granted those folks who designed it might have a different service life expectancy than you might--I would hate to accuse them of ulterior motives in intentionally telling you oil life reminder or 10K miles as a means to get you to replace the vehicle.

The Owners Manual has the official answer. You can get it electronically from Jeep and also as hard copy if you are the first registered owner.

The rest of us, including me, just pull numbers out of our nether parts. I did mine about 5K mainly because I wanted to move over to full synth---another highly controversial topic but it is MY engine and I tend to use it as a Hemi and thus give it a lot of TLC that it may not even need--but it makes ME feel better even if the engine could not give a rat.
