Tailgate Opens, Closes Automatically Once Fully Opened

My tailgate will open normally, but once it reaches the peak, it starts beeping and closes (like someone has pushed the button). Is the cylinder no longer strong enough to hold open door or is it a sensor? I'm assuming, since it is beeping it is a sensor gone bad. What and where would this sensor be?

Re: Tailgate Opens, Closes Automatically Once Fully Opened

No warranty? Will it auto reverse if it detects an obstruction?

Unfortunately, no warranty 55,000 miles. The door does stop if it detects an object (usually my head), but it take a significant amount of force to stop it.

Re: Tailgate Opens, Closes Automatically Once Fully Opened

Based on what you're describing I dont think its an issue with the struts. Someone posted a few months ago on here (or another forum) a video of their issue, the difference from reading is that when theirs hit the top location it came back down fast and with a lot of force - there issue was clearly the struts.

When yours lowers does it do so at the regular speed or is it much faster than when it worked as expected?

It goes down at the regular speed.

It sounds like an end of travel switch isn't making, the actuator keeps going, and binds when the struts max out. I believe the actuator has a current sensor that detects an overload (liftgate binds, hits something) and it reverses.

Re: Tailgate Opens, Closes Automatically Once Fully Opened

Where is that sensor or actuator located?

The actuator is the liftgate motor and whatever mechanical method is used to move the liftgate. On my 14 GC, its an "electric cylinder" on the drivers side of the liftgate. It looks like a shock absorber. I suspect there are up and down end of travel switches integrated in the mechanism. Perhaps someone else can answer specifically for your year model.
