Temp fluctuating normal?

I own a 2013 Laredo 4x4 and when I got it it was constantly showing temps up to and including 245 degrees F. Thing is they never went down but just hanged that high for a long time . Took it in and turns out faulty thermostat.

Fast forward to present where temps will still go high but mainly when I'm going 30 to 50 miles per hour or on the freeway going about 65. Sometimes at a light I would check coolant temp and wow 249. But then it would go back down slowly like the thermostat and fans were working . But right after if I started to speed up they would climb back up to 240. I'm just confused , is this normal to fluctuate so drastically? Ambient temps are around 80 degrees here in Houston,Tx.

Bump with an engine/drivetrain description?

Some models have temperature sensors that are crap, as well as oil pressure sensors.

Thermostat installed backwards or with gasket material interfering with closure?

What radiator do you have? Factory or aftermarket?
Coolant changed per schedule, or allowed to stay in there and crud up?
Non-distilled mineral heavy water ever used to thin pure antifreeze or always use premix?

Failure to burp air from the system on replacement?

Any spongy hoses?

Water pump OK?

Cooling fan OK?

Can you see coolant moving in the radiator once it hits thermostat temp? [leave the cap off as it heats up]

The 4.0 six runs cool at temps in the 130 range with cooling system in halfway decent condition. You have a bit of extra heat load from the Houston levels of humidity, but 80 degrees shouldn't be at all an issue.

Thanks for replying.. Everything is stock I got it in August of this year. I'm taking it to the dealer since the repair they did with the thermostat is still under warranty. I figured this wasn't normal. It's hard to check the fans cause when I'm stationary it doesn't overheat ( it stays in the middle range) . I hope its something simple like a switch.

If that doesn't fix it, come back with an engine and drivetrain description, whether or not you have transmission cooler, AC, mileage, etc.

Hopefully it is nothing where you'd be looking at a compression test.

Alright so I had to reschedule the dealer till next Monday cause they were full on customers. So I found something out just awhile ago, so I'm driving down a side street (speed about 45mph) temp is reading 248 degrees F., so I pull into a car wash and Pop the hood. I quickly run to the front and it's weird cause nothing seems hot. Fan is on and I can literally touch the radiator cap and it's cool to the touch, I see no smoke. Any ideas on what this could be? Oh and when the temps get that high transmission delays gears like crazy, I've read that that is normal when the computer is seeing those temps.

It would appear that either your thermostat is not opening or possibly even your water pump has bit the dust.

The top of the radiator should be hot if your engine temp is that hot. The transmission would tend to indicate that the sensor is not the culprit.

It could still be air pockets from prior work, but since it is under warranty, offer to take the service manager for a drive to demonstrate.

Offer to let him either walk back or agree to fix the damn thing and this time give it an appropriate test drive where the engine heats up.

Temp fluctuating normal?

***UPDATE***

So I got it fixed per se.. The dealer said it was air that needed to be bleeded out. Ok that makes sense since they were working on the thermostat a couple weeks back. Temp has stayed beautiful up until a couple days ago. I had just turned it on and went down the road and was at a light , I saw the temp rising ( close to above the middle mark). I went to a nearby parking lot and sat there. The temp steadily rose up until 257, temp light went on. WTH. I turned it off then waited a minute and turned it back on , temp went back to 257 right away. I drove off and then I heard a rush of water by the dash. Temp went all the way back down quickly to under the halfway mark. Now I notice this is happening frequently. If I move quickly or to a stop when I first turn it on, it'll rise. If I stop in park, then step on the gas , I hear the water and the temp goes back down. When I'm driving normally the temp stays ok. Any opinions?
