Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I am not sure what it was exactly (can find out more if needed) but I had this problem and took it to my local mechanic and he said all the bolts where loose where the rear differential meets the driveshaft. He was literally able to tighten them with his hands thats how loose it was! If you feel a thud when breaking and the same thud when starting from a standstill it could potentially be this problem. By the way I have a overland with hemi/air suspension.

Any more info would be great. Has this fixed the problem for you?

I have the 20" wheels.

It is annoying at times, but it seems based on the number of responses a lot of them do it. Then I'm sure there are some people that have the issue but don't notice it. It's going to be something in the steering shaft or front suspension not the driveline.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I'm of the mindset that if it isnt harming anything and it isnt too anoying then I'm gonna leave it alone. Everytime someone gets under that hood there is a potential for more problems. I went in for an oil change in my other vehicle a few years ago, when I came out they forgot to put oil in the car. I drove all the way home with no oil in the car and this was done at the Jeep dealer.

I agree, that's why I have not taken it into the dealer for this. The last thing I would want is to take in for this and get it back with this and other issues. I will just wait I'm sure at some point a TSB will come out if this is a common problem.

Well in order for this to get recognised as a common problem, we really should report it i would think. Im going to the dealer in the am, lets see what they say.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I have been paying close attention to this the last couple days driving. I am wondering how many of the people that have this issue have the 20" wheels. On mine it does it mostly when braking at lower speed, but I don't think it's the brakes causing it. I think it is just when the weight is shifted to the front. Now back to the wheels, I am wondering if it is the low profile tires over inperfections in the pavement resonating through the steering shaft when braking with the extra weight over the front tires. Just wondering what others with this issue think of this theory.
