Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I have a Laredo and have noticed this too, but thought maybe it was normal. After reading this post, I am going to try and figure out what scenarios it happens in.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

Update: I took mine in this morning and had them check this. They tightened all the bolts in the front end to spec and lubed the intermediate shaft. From what I can tell this pretty much took care of it, but the tech said he could still feel it a little. So they ordered a new intermediate shaft it will take about a week to get.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I just got a call about my Overland 4x4 that I took in for service on Monday. They replaced the intermediate shaft. I won't pick the truck up until Monday because I'm gone on vacation so I don't know if this fixed the problem, but I'm hopeful it did. I'll update once I've had time to test drive my Jeep.

@ Cabinet--

Let me know what they say.. is it a new 'type' of shaft? or same one.. just replacing it..

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

It appears that the "new" intermediate steering shaft has cured my issue for now. I have only driven the Jeep about 20 miles since picking it up, but I have yet to experience the same thud/knock in the steering that was very obvious before the fix. Hopefully, this new shaft will cure the problem for the long term.

I'm guessing the intermediate shaft that used is the same part as the original. The part number on my invoice is 5057539-AC.

I might have spoke too soon. I felt the thud a few times this afternoon while driving home in the glorious 105 degree temp here in north Texas. It wasn't nearly as bad as before, but there still seems to be an issue. I'm not going to do anything right now unless it starts getting worse. Maybe Jeep will come up with a redesigned shaft in the mean time.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I am getting a new intermediate shaft on mine installed next week. I am hopeful it takes the thud away completely, but reading this makes me wonder.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

From the tons of pages at the wrangler site-- (I had a wrangler for 10 yrs.. about 3 in total) the new shaft will appear to work.. then it simply thuds again.. I didn't do anything with my (wrangler 07 with 22k miles on it when I traded) but from reading.. others with GM's etc .. had this same comment.. the shaft thud..

This was one of the main reasons why I traded my wrangler.. and (almost got a bmw suv) however the BMW suv rides like a bad minivan. love the creature comforts in my new overland!

I have a summer use only bmw 328 i (xdrive) and it's solid like a rock!
