Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

5.7 with QL and 20" wheels. VERY SLIGHT thud (feels like in the steering column - you can feel it faintly in the steering wheel) when turning and very slowly going over a speed bump. Certainly not bad enough to make me want to bring to the dealer and have them start tearing stuff apart to look for something they will probably never find anyhow!

Will definitely keep posted here, as these forums seem to be very valuable for finding detailed info!

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I had the intermediate shaft replaced today it seems to have solved the problem. I drove it around for a little while and I could not get it to thud after the repair.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

OH, I have the knock too. I have a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I've had about 2 months now. I have about 3500 miles on it so far. Noticed the "knocking" sound in my steering wheel almost immediatley. Took it in twice soo far. Still have the annoying knock. They didn't have a clue what I was talking about until I took the technician for a ride myself so I could show him. It's VERY ANNOYING. I seem to notice it most when I'm pumping the brakes to slow down, like when approaching a red light or stop sign. I also can re-create the knock sometimes by just releasing my foot off the brake after being at a complete stop. It almost feels like something's loose somewhere in the steering and getting knocked up against something when I apply the brake. It is beyond annoying at this point and hard to disregard it once you notice it. I was told by the dealer that they thought it may very well be something related to my power telescoping wheel, that it may just be a normal operating characteristic of the power telescoping wheel. I did drive a grand cherokee without the power telescoping wheel option and found no knocking sound at all in the wheel. Very tight, no knock. They did not have another grand cherokee on the lot with a power telescoping wheel(go figure), so I could not compare. Wish I could have. They submitted the problem to Jeep and "I was told" that the response they got back from their inquiry into the knocking sound was that the sound I was experiancing was in fact, a normal operating characteristic of the power telescoping wheel. ????????? Really? Has anybody else had any success in eliminating their knocking annoyances? I just noticed the above listed TSB. Thank you! I am taking the TSB with me on Tuesday to my appt and hopefully getting it ordered and more importantly FIXED FINALLY.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

Anyone know exactly what the "mechanics" of replacing this shaft involve?

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I believe there is a description of the install in the TSB.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

I think I finally got rid of my knock. I had the intermediate shaft replaced for a second time, but this time they used the updated part listed in the TSB. So far the problem appears to be gone.

Unfortunately, I will have to go back to my dealer for other issues. I had to have a washer nozzle replaced because it leaked fluid all over my hood. When the tech installed the new part he dented my hood. Also, I'm getting a seat cover and cushion on the driver's seat due to a crunching you can feel in the seat back. The parts should be here by the end of next week.

I have to admit, I'm really having second thoughts about buying this Jeep. I've had it for two months and around 2000 miles and so far it has been in the shop twice for a total of seven days. None of the issues I have had are major mechanical problems, but they are all annoying problems none the less.

I will say that my dealer, Moritz Jeep in Fort Worth, TX, has been great. They provided me with a free loan car this last time my Jeep was in the shop. I could have gotten one the first time I took the GC in as well, but I was headed out on vacation and saw no reason to have their loaner sitting in my driveway while I was gone. Also, when I found out about the new part associated with the clunk TSB I just called my service rep and she ordered the part without me even coming in to prove the problem was still there. I definitely give them four out of five stars and am only withholding the fifth star because the tech dented my hood.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

Remember that the steering shaft problem is said to affect JGCs with a build date prior to July 1, 2011. If you are having a steering wheel looseness, thud, clicking or slipping problem, as I am on my 2011 Overland Summit V-8 (built April 7th), then chances are it's an intermediate shaft issue. Now that the bulletin is out, my dealer has ordered the part- no questions asked- and it gets installed on Tuesday. I will update results.

Re: Thud in steering wheel at low speed

Just to update the results. The problem is fixed. It was the intermediate shaft problem as described in the TSB. It's nice to have this issue fixed. Car just feels better.
