Thud/rattle sound from rear suspension

Our 2012 Gran Cherokee Limited with 4900 miles developed a thud or rattle sound from the rear suspension are when hitting small/moderate bumps (pot hole, manhole cover, dips in street, etc) at slow in town speeds. Just took too the local Jeep dealer and they said they can hear it too but don't know what it is and we will have to just live with the sound. We took the spare tire, storage bins, tire tools, rear deck retractable cover, etc all out and it is still there. Riding in the back you can hear it is under the car. Doing a few searches brought up some TSBs but those all seem to apply to vehicles built before march 2011. This one was built 11/11 according to the door sticker. Had anyone had a shocks or suspension bushing issue or the like on the later model ones?

Re: Thud/rattle sound from rear suspension

Do you have a tow package? Thought I read about complaints about noise from the load-leveling shocks. Our suspension tends to be a bit noisy when going over washboard bumps but it's not bothersome.

Re: Thud/rattle sound from rear suspension

The latest is that according to Chrysler, they are aware of the issue and working on a tsb or recall or whatever they call it.

There is a design flaw apparently and the load leveling shock is too short. How all that comes into play I have no idea as I have never inspected it myself. I have had that issue since day one where intermittently I hear a thud like a loose bowling ball in the trunk on accelerating from a stop. The issue will not damage anything according to chrysler and a fix is in the works.

I am brining mine in on Monday for a few issues. I dont expect it back right away but Ill kepp ya posted if there is wor from chrysler.

I will link to the thread where this information is in more detail. the thread was called Aussie rear suspension knock or something similiar.

edit for link: Wk2 Rear Knocking Noise Aussie GC Laredo

Also there is issues sometimes with the air shocks/suspension that could be the rattle. Mine had a bad creaking like an old hayride from day one right rear shock. Was replaced and that noise went away. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I might check it out some myself since the jeep dealer told us to just live with it and not willing to work with us.

Our 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland has a rattle shound from the rear. We did the same and took out the storage bins. Hitting bumps and just backing out of my drive way and turns left or right as well as just accelerating, you hear the noise. It is just so annoying. Its been to the dealership several time. First they said it was the back left shock that had no fluid left in it. So that was replaced. Noise still there. Back into dealership. Replaced right shock. Noise still. Back to dealership. Replaced Left shock again. Noise again. Back to dealership. Mount to bushing replaced and greased. Rattling noise still. Need to bring back to dealership. Really tired of this. Hope there is a fix. Also have issues of the suspension going up and down when starting and shuting off. Also have an issue that sometimes the Jeep lunges foward/ jerks foward when starting vehicle. any answers please advise

Re: Thud/rattle sound from rear suspension

gvadala - do a search for the lunging/jerking problem, that has been well discussed and an actual response from Jeep has been posted.

found the thread...

Jerking motion upon engine start? Easy fellas

Re: Thud/rattle sound from rear suspension

Well shortly after I posted this we took it to a second dealer after the first told us to live with it. They checked it out, did some research and ordered us new rear shocks. It took like 2-3 months to get them as they said they were coming out with an updated shock for this problem. Well now it's making the sound again. Haven't taken it to the dealer since the only Jeep dealer that will work with us is 100 miles away. Had half a thought to maybe look into some aftermarket rear shocks instead of going through this again. Anyone here do some bilsteins or the like? anyone have trouble with the noisy rear shocks still too?

There are several posts about this. So far no real solution available. Even the TSB for this already dated (meaning the described part to replace the noisy shocks). I thought of putting some rubber piece between the shock mount and the wheel well. But so far I will go to the dealer each time it starts and let the replace it. See it the same as a filter change ;-)

Either we will give up (live with the noise, replace shocks regularly, replace shocks & springs to standard suspension, lemon law the car) or Jeep eventually brings a solution. Guess what I bet for?
