Tick/click when breaking or turning?

When I drive with the windows down and the radio off, I consistently hear a tick or click sound every few seconds, espcially when breaking and turning. I also hear it when I shift the gear selector from Park to Drive, Park to Reverse, etc.

I took it to the dealer last week, and after thoroughly examining my Jeep and finding nothing wrong, I was told that because the Jeep is always in 4 wheel drive mode, the ticking sound is just the system readying itself for 4 wheel drive necessities. They said that even though the road may be dry or whatever, the 4 wheel drive system constantly arms itself for action when breaking or turning regardless, and that is what the ticking sound is. Apparently, the technician came to this conclusion after driving two other GC's from the garage and they also made the same sound.

Design flaw? Maybe. Annoying? Definitely. Should I still be concerned? Unsure.

Anyone else notice this sound also? The only way to hear it is with the windows down and radio off.

I've got a Hemi 4x4 and I hear this all the time with the windows down. Same conditions as the OP (shifting between Park->Reverse-> Neutral->Drive). Also hear it at low rolling speeds right after I give it the gas, and right after I let off the gas. A good example is when I'm in a long drive thru line at a fast food joint/ATM, etc. Constant clicking in stop-and-go conditions like that. Sounds to me like a solenoid clicking when the transmission shifts gears or disengages. I find it to be very annoying, and it's probably my #1 complaint.

My only beefs with my WK2 so far are with the transmission. In addition to the clicking, I sometimes get rough clunks between park, drive, neutral, reverse, and its not just when the driveline is loaded from sitting on an incline. Also shifting is not very smooth when driving it hard, especially in Auto mode. Sport mode smooths things out a bit. I also think I might have a relatively minor case of the shudder issue.

I finally took my Jeep to another dealer this morning because I couldn't take the clicking anymore. It's been there for 6 hours and I'm told that it might have something to do with the transfer case but not sure yet. I will update once I learn more.

After 36 hours with the car, the dealer said that although the technician heard the click/tick and narrowed it down to the transfer case, there was nothing they could do because there didn't appear to be a mechanical problem connected to the sound, no codes were thrown, and no TSB's had been released on the issue. The tech said he drove two other JGC's and heard the same sound on all of them, so therefore it seems like a design problem. They told me to take it up directly with Chrysler because there is nothing they can do. For $40,000 + I don't want to hear that a strange sound is "nornal" simply because other vehicles are making it also!

Basically, they said that until enough people make the same complaint the issue won't be addressed. If enough folks complain about it though, then they might look into it and come up with a fix. Not happy.

I know im digging this thread up from the grave, but im experience this EXACT thing with my 2 months old 2012 Overland V6 4x4. I SWEAR I do not remember hearing this noise up until about last week. I just think the noise is so obvious with the windows down and radio down that I know I would have heard it. So to me it seems something must have changed recently for this noise to start happening.

The noise on my car happens exactly like the OP stated so I dont need to restate all that. Another good way to describe the sound is it reminds me exactly how your a/c compressor sounds when it clicks on and off if you have your a/c on in your car. When slowing down my car clicks exactly at 10mph everytime. Then also in the other situations the OP mentioned as well.

Nothings seems to be wrong with my Jeep, but now I hear this click all the time and I know its gonna keep annoying me lol.

dont know if i ever noticed it.. usually have the radio on and kids in the back making noise... must be like the 60mph "vibration" some of us are having with our v6's....just a normal thing but annoying thing...

my 7mos old overland does it as well and has since day one. sounds like it's coming mainly from the rear but is exactly like the OP stated. I'm assuming it's completely normal as it occurs the same way every time. It is annoying if slowly stopping and going with windows down and in a all quiet setting.

Im a bit late to this thread but have had the same issue...amongst others, unfortunately. I have a 12 Overland V6. I spent about an hour today with the NE District Technician to check on this issue. I drove 3 other Jeeps with him to validate that it is "normal" with these vehicles. I said well it must be a design flaw, his response was that the transfer case has a little play and it has to for mechanical purposes. There is no fix because they dont consider it an issue. Im not satisfied with the answer, its extremely annoying. My 2002 JGC Ltd did not annoy me this much, why shouls a 40k plus 2012? I am pursuing Lemon Law as mine has been in the shop 20 days for various issues. I love this vehicle but Im concerned that if I ever want to sell or trade it I will get croaked due to the service history in the first 3 months of ownership.

I thought that clicking was coming from the electrically powered steering. I hear it when I turn my wheels and only at the beginning of the turn (one click, either direction).

That's what it sounds like to me as well. One guy says it sounds like its coming from the back, but I have the clicking too and it's without a doubt coming from the front. Does it when I slow through 10 mph or when I start off from a stop, or like you said I can make it click just by turning the wheel (even while stopped). So I agree I say it's something with the electro-hydraulic steering. Probably normal operation, but annoying for sure.

Waking up this old thread.

I had my first oil change done on my Jeep and brought up this clicking noise to the service advisor. The technician took a drive and basically said that the clicking noise is due to "posi differential" in the Jeep.

Anyone know what "posi differential" means and if our Jeeps have that built in?

Cheers,

I'm having the same problem with the tick/click right now on my 12 JGC v6 with just over 2k miles. However, this problem began on the same day that I had noticed shuddering when placing my Jeep into drive from reverse. I am also noticing a lack of power when accelerating, more or less a fluctuation of power and or hesitation in the lower gears. I have an appointment scheduled with the service department tomorrow afternoon. I hope this problem goes away just as fast as it came!

I get the clicks as well.

I get the click when coming to a stop at exactly 10mph. That click is either the transfer case, or the transmission. WIthout fail everytime approaching a stop at exactly 10mph.

I also get a click simply turning the wheel to the left or the right. This click sounds very similar but is obviously coming from the power steering as it will bump the idle rpms just a tad when the click occurs.

Others should tell me if they get the clicking by simply turning the steering wheel to the left or right. I want to know if I am the only one with a loud power steering switch.

Nope your not the only one. As I said above my 2012 Overland V6 doesn it exactly as you describe. Everytime when slowing at exactly 10mph I get a click, then it clicks again when I start back up from a stop. I think when starting from a stop it does it around 6mph. I can also make it click by turning the steering wheel. It may not even be a problem it might be normal operation, but with the windows down and quiet cruikses it sure gets kind of annoying. Never heard any other car make clicks like this, so why would the Jeep do it? Kind of makes me want to go test drive another and see if it does it.
