Ticking from dash

Nothing seems to act bad at the dealer but you would think a code error would pop up. Sadly I won't know until I take it to a dealer and hope the very rare occasion happens. I've tried to record the noise with a phone, but I'm always too late. I should turn the mute button off my dash camera, but then they word here all the four letter bombs I start dropping on a Jeep when this stuff happens.

Just aggravating.

The HVAC will sometimes make a noise similar to what you're describing when the A/C system comes on. Usually this happens when it hasn't been run for a few hours or more and has totally depressurized (the A/C is a pressurized gas/liquid system). What you are hearing is the compressor repressurizing the refrigerant lines. Sometimes you may even hear a quick "running water" sound from the liquid part of the refrigerant system. It's normal -- there's nothing that can be done to "fix" it.

I'm sorry if you're having other issues but this doesn't sound like it is one.

Thanks for the reply. It's cold here in upstate New York and I've never heard anything like this in the 21 previous vehicles I have owned or driven as fleet vehicles. I do hope you are right though.

If you have your HVAC system set to "auto" the A/C compressor will still come on. My 2014 made this same noise--as does my 2015 now in the situations mentioned. The A/C evaporator core is located behind the dash and you're hearing it "charging" with refrigerant as the compressor first comes on.

AC compressors cycle every so often in order to keep them lubricated.
I don't think that's it though. Do you have HD storage in your rig? Could be the plate spinning.

I know it needs to go to the dealer but I'm traveling for work and just can't get there probably until January but the sound is driving me crazy. It's got 15,400 miles on it. Not sure how long it's been doing this since I bought it CPO with 14,200 miles on it. I've searched TSB's but I can't seem to find anything on this.
Had this exact same issue on 2011 GC Laredo, shortly thereafter the heat stopped working on the drivers side. Took it to the dealer and quoted, 2000$ to replace blend doors. Havent bothered with the repair yet. Anyone else know of a DIY fix for this or any other options that wont cost so much?

Re: Ticking from dash

HVAC needs to be checked in my WK2 from 2011. It had theHVACower replaced about 18 months ago. The weird gas sound could very well be the charging of the AC. I have coverage and know that familiar whining with the fans blower. All of these posts have been very helpful.

Re: Ticking from dash

I recently had to move some fuel lines moved away from the fire wall due to the dash exhibiting similar sounds as described. I was dreading to go down the ac blower route and removing the dash, but through chance checked the fuel lines and now intermittent rattle free.

However, my vehicle is a diesel so I don't know if this would pertain to this example but it's food for thought.

Re: Ticking from dash

The gas charge-discharging sound is getting much more frequent as temps drop. Not good.

Re: Ticking from dash

As we fluctuate to warmer temp and mix in some near freezing the sounds are really getting loud. It sounds as if Darth Vader himself is behind my entertainment system and middle cents. I get the evaporator/condenser concept but this is really happening quite often and I can't hasten it by turning AC on manually with more fan. Or really any movements. I actually got a decent two minute recording on my phone but the loudest stuff has happened while moving and unrecorded. Any other thoughts? I need to visit the evil dealership 1 or 2 this week for recall work. For now I'm just going with the fuel switch. I have tires and brakes needed by Summers end. Routine maintenance can cost a bit but other than these HVAC issues I've only had one sensor go out and we have severe weather and many long drives with rough roads as well. I want to keep this car as I really see no benefit from switching to a '15-15 model.
