So I went to an event on a college campus yesterday afternoon. Needed to visit a merchandise store briefly before I attended the meeting I was there for. Busy part of town, right off campus. Parked in a Publix lot directly across from the store. Was in the store maybe 10 minutes.
There are signs posted saying the lot of for Publix shoppers only. I am not disputing this. I went to college there, and am familiar with the area. I have parked in this spot before---as far away from the Publix building as you can get and still be in the lot.
I come out and begin approaching my car and see that a two truck already has me "hooked up". Rear tires up in the air, ratchet straps around each rear tire. He also has a honda accord actually up on the flatbed part. That car was literally a foot from touching my tailgate. I was stunned, of course and got to the guy quickly. You know where this is going---Even though he had not left, had not even started his truck, he demanded a drop fee. 160 dollars, cash only. Later on I found out 160 was the cost they charge to tow it all the way to their lot. So charging 160 just to "drop" it makes no sense.
I knew I WAS parked illegally. I could not dispute that. I should not have parked there. But this was so frustrating. I was so scared watching the guy lower it down. Again, it was mere inches from bumping the other car. Luckily it came down smoothly and safely.
I kept trying to look on the bright side--he did not get away with the car. Never left with it. Also, he never moved my car one inch. Which leads to my questions....
With the rear wheels up, would my car have moved smoothly and safely? Front wheels would have turned freely?I was in my 4WD Limited.
