Tranny shifting when cold

How many of you have had the recent tranny software update done and notice when first starting to drive the car, when cold, the first couple gear shifts don't go smoothly(higher RPM)? After a minute or so it will shift normal. Just wanted to see if anyone else has the same symptoms. Mine is a 10/13 build.

Yes, mine does the same thing and there have been comments by others on here. Likely, the current programming on the current and prior releases. I am hoping that the next firmware update addresses this issue. I have been using the paddle shifter for the up shifts until warm.

Yes, mine does this as well (updated with Rev C of the tranny updates) and started after that update. I just attributed it as being cold and didn't worry about it. It shifts fine after it warms. Mine was an August 2013 build. Let us know if you get updated and it addresses this.

Re: Tranny shifting when cold

I am also having this issue. However, it happens to my Jeep anytime after the car sits for a while. I thought it was something that was happening at the end of the winter because of it not being warmed up, however, it has been in the 60's/70's here for a a month now and I am still having the issue every time I start my Jeep after it was sitting.

Re: Tranny shifting when cold

I have noticed recently the trans shifting isn't as smooth as before the last updates. Downshifts when coming to a stop have a slight lurch but not as bad as before the update and sometimes up shifting isn't as smooth as it can be other times. Sport mode seems tougher also but it's still not as bad as the original trans software it came with or the next one.

Re: Tranny shifting when cold

My guess is that the valve body and torque converter lockup have operating issues on cold starts and restarts. Low rpm shifts have a shudder and delay on the original programming when cold on some vehicles after several thousand miles of break-in. It is probably due to the valve body behaving different after break-in. The "fix" is to shift at a higher rpm immediately after startup when the transmission is below a certain temperature.

I can manually shift at higher rpm when cold and I don't get the unusual behavior after a few miles. I don't think this is the best fix. Its a software solution to a hardware problem.

Mine shifts perfectly after a mile or two. I am running the original TCM flash for a 9/13 build.

Mine does this as well. I've had all the available firmware updates and it has not improved. I also have harsh downshifting between certain gears all the time regardless of temperature.

Re: Tranny shifting when cold

Same issue here.. i made it a habit all winter to let it warm up like 10 minutes before driving.. just a horrible vehicle.

A friend of mine is a engineer at the GM tech center in warren and warned me not to buy this thing.. live and learn

The tranny sucks, warm or cold. Period.

Re: Tranny shifting when cold

Let me be clear....every automatic I have ever owned, GM and Ford included, have had cold shifts that differ from warm operation. ZF makes a good transmission. Several premium brands use the exact same tranny. Being a hydraulically operated device, it will feel different when the oil is cold and has a higher viscosity.

The GM 700R4 had issues in my Chevy truck, the 4R100 in my Excursion did too. Do the vehicles suck...no.

I have a warranty. If the ZF in my GC becomes inoperable or flaky, it will be fixed. For now, it shifts different when cold...no surprise there.
