Re: Transmission Shudder

Here is what I was recently told. My 2012 5.7 Overland has 6 speeds. In order to maximize gas efficiency, the engine tries to get to the sixth gear as fast as possible. When it gets past a certain gear (can't remember wheither its 4th or 5th) some type of torque lock engages which makes it more difficult to downshift. This is all in an effort to maximize gas consumption. I was told the sudder we are feeling is "normal" but is and is essentially the engine fighting with the torque convertor. I was told when that happens, just to manually downshift to 5th gear and it will go away which it does.

If that is how it was actually designed and I have to physically override this torque converter all the time, its retarded.

Re: Transmission Shudder

2012 5.7 Overland/Summit. Absolutely no issues in over 11K miles with any of this - has been the best SUV ever owned after 2 MDXs, and 3 Explorers

Re: Transmission Shudder

So the same issue that was happening in the WK's is still present in the WK2's? Sounds like the same shitty torque converter was used. My '06's issue isn't terrible, but the fact that they haven't done anything major about it yet says a lot about Chrysler engineering.

Re: Transmission Shudder

Whole new transmission coming in '14 so why do anything to the existing unit - it works and is reliable - all development went into the "new" Torque-Flyte 8.....

Re: Transmission Shudder

The service writer could feel it, but wouldn't confirm it. Someone has their head stuck in the sand on this one. Otherwise, I love my 2011 5.7L WK2.

Interesting. My mom's 2011 Overland has no problems.

My buddy has this problem with his 2005 WK 5.7, and my fiancee's father has the same problem on his 2002 4.7 WJ.

We are all desperate for a solution!

Re: Transmission Shudder

Hello all. It's sad that this thread inspired my first post on this forum, but I am very worried now. Has anyone heard if this issue is present on MY13? I am literally days away from taking delivery of my 2013 limited and I'm wondering if I should not accept it? This issue is major, but in addition, this forum has pointed out so many problems indicative of poor manufacturing processes, which concerns me greatly. I don't want to spend well over $40k for something that is constantly going into the shop. Any words of advice?

Re: Transmission Shudder

Hi all, I 've had my 2011 GC Overland 5.7 since Oct. 2011. At first I had no issues, then at 17K miles, I installed a K&N Series 77 CAI. This is a great mod! So, I went to bring the GC to the dealership for 24K service and inspection sticker. To avoid raising a red flag, I removed the K&N and re-installed the stock air box. The GC runs like crap even after one month. Now I experience the shudder going up inclines around my new home. I will be re-installing the K&N this weekend and will post the results.

This is a known issue and is a software issue not a hardware issue. The problem is the torque converter going into full lockup when it should really not be in full lockup. This is typically noted when the engine is loaded under light throttle apply, light enough that it doesn't kick down, this causes some chugging and when the torque converter is locked the chugging is transfered through the drive train. That said I'm sure there is a lot more behind just adjusting the lockup point like fuel economy and other possible repercussions... This is not an indication of failure.

If you don't want to take a chance on something that may be going into the shop, just don't buy anything. Take public transportation, taxi, or use a rental car. Borrow the neighbor's car.

There are basically two kinds of folks on forums. There are the enthusiasts that want to talk about the vehicle, many more are folks with a problem that are searching for help. You will rarely find the millions of others without issue here. So your impression of poor manufacturing process is slanted by you looking at filtered/bad data. Poor research in other words. You may want to check out other car forums. With few exceptions you will see the same thing.

Re: Transmission Shudder

ColdCase, I agree with you; buying a car, new or used, can be risky. I ordered the GC because of its gleaming reviews from nearly every source I could find. Now, reading through these forums has made me nervous, but as you pointed out this forum (and more specifically this subforum) is where people go to discuss issues. I have this idea in my head that every WK2 at some time will develop this "shudder" issue, but I must try to be realistic and try to remember the thousands of beaming jeep owners who have had few to no issues. So for now, I will resume my giddy anticipation of my GCs arrival next week and try to be hopeful and optimistic. I would; however, appreciate some more input from 2013 owners... has this purported software issue been succesfully addressed for MY13?

Maybe we should have a "My JGC is running fine and I'm completely satisfied" subforum for us worriers

Based on my reading this forum I waited a year to avoid this shudder problem with the Hemi. There was supposedly a fix for this issue sometime in July of 2011: Important new TSB for 2011 5.7L owners AND http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_2100410.pdf. I bought a 2012 Overland with the Hemi with a build date of August 2011 and I do not have any shudder problem.
