Transmission Trouble

My transmission is out. When I shift it to drive or reverse it takes it a bit to get into gear. I went to a mechanic and he said I need a new one. But will rebuilding it fix the transmission?

I have a 95 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo.

Automatic transmission.

6 cylinder
