Lucky me.
Sure, watch a video, and call engineering with questions. What's wrong with that? Videos are great way to augment written instructions, look at youtube.

I can see being concerned if they have to open the transmission up, but replacing it? Big deal. It's a big piece. I think it's easy to argue replacing the transmission is easier than fixing it in terms of labor and complexity.

And I think it would be fair to make a stink that they should swap out the transmission rather than let their inexperienced team fix it. But perhaps they bring in a skilled transmission tech in to fix it, perhaps from another dealership. Also may depend on any special tooling the transmission work may require.

But a new truck? Seriously? I don't think there's a lot of hand fitting done anymore, it's pretty much all computer machine work to make parts that can be replaced by other parts. Bet they'll be able to get yours fixed a lot faster than they can get you a new truck, in your trim, with your colors, and your options, nearby and not on a train from Detroit.

In the end, the transmission is a box of parts. It started as a box of parts that someone(s) put together. It's also designed, to some extent, to be repaired, in an open air bay, under dim light, by some tech named Hank, in a oil stained blue shirt, since they're expensive to replace wholesale.

For all you know, it's a bad sensor that's trivial to replace (as trivial as anything is regarding a transmission). That's probably why they suggested looking for metal in the pan -- to see if anything really got hurt, or the transmission has just gone stupid due to an electrical problem.

Anytime something is repaired for the first time, it's a learning experience for the person or persons doing the work. Excuse me if I'd rather my truck not be the guinea pig. And yeah being 5 weeks old with less than 2000 miles I have every right to be upset.

Why would you say that? Oh, you have the German built ZF. Personally, I'd rather it was a German built ZF that was having the problem.

SkipBGrad, hope it's an easy fix, and all turns out well for your Jeep.

Re: Transmission won't shift into reverse 2014 Limited

I'd be on the fence. Replacing transmission is Major Surgery.

It could be something simple inside to fix.

Make sure you get the extended warranty though

On this I strongly disagree!

I'd rather see a replacement than a repair. There are too many little parts on the inside, and some pretty big bolts on the outside.

You're not the guinea pig here really. Chrysler did exactly this same thing back when the 4/5 speed 5-45RFE transmission was introduced (WJ). They looked for obvious failure (metal in the pan, etc), which meant a full replacement of the transmission and torque converter as a unit. Any other failure was considered to be an electrical (solenoid or sensor) or valve body issue, and those were simply replaced as a package. Not a huge big deal, and actually fairly non-invasive from a relative perspective.

Sure...you have the right to be upset. Within reason. New truck? No...that's overboard...and you WILL get Chrysler to shut down on you if you start making unreasonable demands like that at this point. Chrysler's (and other manufacturers) warranty does not give you a replacement vehicle as an option simply due to a failure. It says they will fix the issue and repair the vehicle. Your state's Lemon laws do not offer you a new truck for a singular failure either.

I feel for you...but just take a deep breath, relax, be REASONABLE and allow Chrysler and the dealership a chance to fix the issue.

Well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

Re: Transmission won't shift into reverse 2014 Limited

Two days after being towed to the dealer, the update is it needs a new valve body. No metal found when dropping the pan. Unfortunately, there are 54 valve bodies on backorder across the country.

My guess is that the valve body and solenoid pack are one unit (or they don't want to separate them) as your failure really sounds like a bad solenoid. As transmission "surgeries" go this would be pretty minor. Sucks in a new vehicle but I wouldn't be too concerned about the "operation" so to speak.

X2. As far as transmissions go this a simple/uncomplicated fix. Don't worry about it and enjoy your Jeep for yrs to come.

Picked up my Jeep after 17 days at the dealer. They replaced the valve body which was on national back order (Hmmm did others need replacing too?). The 8-speed valve body replacement was new territory for the techs at my dealer so they worked closely with their engineering contact at Chrysler. Once they got it back together, the transmission operated normally but was still throwing a code (MIL illuminated). Engineering determined it was a connector in the valve body that was not seated properly (from manufacturing). So, you guessed it, techs opened it up again and properly seated the connector. Once back together, all was good. On Monday the Case Manager from Chrysler is supposed to follow-up with me regarding my satisfaction with the repair. I sure hope this is behind us, especially since we're driving a fair distance for Thanksgiving.

Skip, thanks for the update. Hope your troubles are over! I would much rather have a hard part failure that can be identified and fixed than have these electronic gremlins that the techs will be chasing down for years to come and some they will never catch. The rollout of this new Uconnect is about as successful as the launch of the Obamacare website! lol
