Turning engine off while in neutral

Does anyone know how (or why you can't) to turn off the engine while the car is in neutral? I was in a car wash today and was taking forever so I wanted to turn off engine to save gas and car says I can't because it isn't in park. Is it possible to change that?

Re: Turning engine off while in neutral

It is probably some safety issue. I do not know if you can change it. I put mine in Park in the carwash and then turn it OFF and then ACC to listen to the stereo without CO ing myself to death.

Something else I didn't know. (hadn't tried this before in the Jeep)

The only car wash I will use here is a totally touchless one, and it
pulls the vehicle through the whole time, so you can't put it in PARK.
I am too afraid to turn off the engine, just in the off-chance it wouldn't start on time, and the guy behind me would rear-end me. Yikes!

I wanted to do this a while back as well. There is only one way I could figure out how to do it.

You need to pop out the start/stop button, then insert the key into the ignition slot. The button pops out fairly easily, I just used my finger to pry it out from the edge. You can manually shut off the engine in neutral that way.

Hope this helps.

If you turn the car off, dont apply the brake and press the start button 2 times it will go acc then run, with it in run you can then press the brake pedal and move it to neutral... Hit the brake and press the start button and it will start from there.
