Typical Jeep Issues?

Last year I purchased an '11 GC Limited with the Hemi, 20" wheels and most of the bells and whistles and with 20k miles on the speedo. Loved it at first Since then, I've put 30k miles on it (I drive a ton for work) and have had a slew of issues. I've been searching the boards here and have found a wealth of knowledge that will help me in hopefully getting the repairs done properly and addressing the TSB's I've found. I've taken it to the dealer three times in a year, but I'm still not satisfied. I've documented the issues and the approximate mileages below.

28k miles-rear view mirror falls off and the plastic housing falls apart. Take it to the dealer, they say they can't reattach it. Take it to Safelite and they reattach it free of charge. Disappointed the dealership can't fix it, don't know why they couldn't.

38k miles-Engine oil seems to be very low, top off and got an oil change. Engine also starts randomly spewing blue smoke when starting. Not every time, but several times a week. Dealer states they cannot replicate the issue. We live on a hill and have recently found the TSB for the blue smoke issue. I've had the blue smoke

40kmiles - Transmission shifts hard from 1 onto 2. When accelerating between 55 and 80 the car has an intermittent shudder or skip in either the engine or transmission. Dealer cannot replicate the problem.

Windshield cracked Randomly driving on the highway. I've never hit anything, it wasn't chipped or cracked. It randomly cracks right over the rain sensor, which stopped working, a new windshield and it is fixed. I got hit by a tire chunk from a tanker blow out in front of me and it cracked my windshield again. Rain sensor stopped working again. The crack extended to 2 sides and a replacement has been scheduled for this weekend.

50k -Check engine light came on, as well as the check gas cap light. The error code is a slight evap leak. Dealer cannot locate the leak. At this time they update the flash codes from Jeep. They conduct a transmission flush ($200) as the fluid was a little low, it doesn't solve the hard shift from 1 into 2, and the shudder/skip is still prevalent when accelerating. Making an appt to take it back this weekend.

Dealer also states that my throttle body is dirty and recommends a $225 cleaning. I opt out of the cleaning an am planning on checking it out myself due to what I've read here about it being unnecessary.

Ideas?

Re: Typical Jeep Issues?

I do not believe that these are typical issues. However if I were you, I would consider trading it in for a MY14.

Re: Typical Jeep Issues?

Throttle body cleaning I believe Jeep doesnt recommend throttle body cleaning
for the V6 and I am not about the hemi.

I'd probably seriously consider trading dealers as well.
Amazing how much variability there is even for dealers located just a couple miles apart.

The hemi blowing smoke as you've discovered can be triggered by idling on a grade. A real dealer that can spell "service" would be aware of this via TSBs which way too many service writers and managers don't bother reading or can't remember longer than the next coffee break.

I wouldn't characterize the throttle body cleaning as a total waste of money, it sorta depends on how many miles you got and how much crud may have built up. You can do it yourself by taking it apart. The garage/dealer stuff used tends to be much better than consumer grade, but check out a Seafoam feed before coughing up $250. [make sure your neighbors are aware you'll be smoking up the 'hood to avoid fire truck arrival]

Dunno how far back the TSB's go for the check engine bogus evap leak issues, but again would expect dealer to be aware. There may be an actual sensor problem if
an upflash don't cure it.

There MAY be some legal issue preventing the dealer from re-attaching the rear view, but that sounds more to me like another reason to check out other dealers before buying anything else Jeep related.

Windshield. Dunno how prevalent it is, but yes the windshields on the GC seem a tad prone to damage--clear back to the original ZJ. Dunno if it is due to shape or thinness, but I cracked one where I would not have expected that minor impact to matter--right along the edge where it mounts seems unduly fragile and the dealer service writers seemed far too familiar with the location and the issue for it to be rare.

I'd check out Milous Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Grand Cherokee Service Bulletins and Recalls site for TSBs at least once a month, and any time you see a problem.

Transmission, can't help, but if a new jeep is an option, you'll love the 14/15 Hemi and 8 speed.

Re: Typical Jeep Issues?

Your car sounds fine, your dealer sounds lousy. Go to WK2jeeps.com and study up on the TSB's for your vehicle. It sounds like you have a good car that is simply in need of some TLC.

+1 on Jeep windshields spontaneously combusting. Probably doesn't help that on freshly gravelled mountain roads I tailgate close enough to read the other guy's speedometer. People drive so slow!

Re: Typical Jeep Issues?

Aren't the mirrors still attached to a bracket that is glued to the windshield? I know every auto parts store used to carry mirror to windshield glue. It was a special blend from "Crazy Glue".

I was reading a Honda manual and came across this. I remembered your post from earlier. It probably is the same for Jeep. This would indicate the gas cap and evap leak are one and the same.

"■ The message appears on when:
An evaporative system leak is detected. This may be caused by the fuel fill cap being loose or not being installed."

not as familiar with the WK2, but I know on the WK the first mod recommended for the HEMI's is a catch can. I'm sure it's not too different for the WK2, so wouldn't think it's unreasonable for your TB to be dirty
