Uconnect/SiriusXM mysteries in Puerto Rico 2014 GC
So I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while now and so far have failed to find a solution. I guess my situation is very particular and, as such, wanted to reach out to the Jeep Garage community since if anyone is able to help me, it’s you guys.
So this is the issue, I purchased a 2014 JGC Summit circa late April 2013 in Puerto Rico. It was actually part of the very first, or at least second, batch to arrive. When I purchased the vehicle, it had the SiriusXM option on the “media page” of the radio as well as the Apps button. As a previous 2011 JGC owner, I was sure I was entitled to the customary 1 year SiriusXM trial. When I called SiriusXM to activate the service, via my paired phone, I was asked for the SiriusXM code from the radio, but when I found it, it showed up as “XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX”. The sales rep was confused and told me activation was not possible with this. This is when I started to dig deeper into the issue. I asked for a build sheet and got a “Priced Order Confirmation” from the dealer which included the following sale codes:
RS8 Sirius Satellite Radio Delete Credit
RT9 Uconnect Access Delete Credit 12mo.
I was somewhat shocked to find this on the document but in all fairness, the dealer never told me I would be receiving the services when I purchased the vehicle (I just assumed the trials would be included). I called the dealer up and they told me that the free trials were deleted because the services were still not available in Puerto Rico but that Chrysler would most likely offer me the free trial once the services became available. So I did some searching and asking around and got to the conclusion that SiriusXM in fact hadn’t setup the service in Puerto Rico when I purchased the vehicle but has since done so; it is now readily available.
As far as Uconnect Apps, I have been told that they are not yet offered in Puerto Rico. Nonetheless, as far as I understand it, they Uconnect apps and services are offered through the Sprint cellular network, which most definitely is in PR as I’m a subscriber. Nonetheless, I’m sure that there are some licensing issues or something similar; its extremely common in Puerto Rico. Being a US territory, lawyers tend to get all mixed up when drafting service contracts. For example, you can get DirectTV in Puerto Rico but JetBlue flights don’t get the DirectTV service when in Puerto Rico ground/airspace.
What happened next? I updated the Uconnect software and lost the “Apps” button, instead I got the export versions “Settings” button. The SiriusXM button was also greyed out. I tried to contact my dealer for information but they weren’t very helpful at all. I called Chrysler US and they would redirect me to Chrysler International whom would redirect me to Chrysler Puerto Rico. Needless to say, Chrysler Puerto Rico is useless. It seems as if it was set up just to address the issue that not even Chrysler knew how to categorize the territory.
I really don’t care all that much for the SiriusXM service. Nonetheless, I’d like to have some of the apps. If the care is not capable of receiving such service, I’d like to at least be able to just use the Uconnect via Mobile app. However, I can’t do so. I’ve registered with moparowner’s connect and the dashboard displays the following when I click on the “Not Connected” message:
Our records show your vehicle may not contain some of the advanced connectivity features we currently offer, or that you have not yet registered for Uconnect Access available on select 2013 model year vehicles.
Nonetheless, I can’t register with Uconnect because I can’t access the registration screen on my radio. So this led me to believe that I didn’t have the necessary components installed on the Jeep in order to one day have the services. I wrote Chrysler and asked for a complete build sheet and got it (seems they actually can help PR customers with certain things), I have attached the complete build list but would like to point to the following items:
RA4S Uconnect 8.4AN AM/FM/SXM/HD/BT/NAV
RSMP SiriusXM Travel Link
RSPS Uconnect Voice Command w/Bluetooth
RSRP Roadside Assistance and 9-1-1 Call
RSSP SiriusXM Traffic
RS8A Satellite Services Delete Credit
RT9A Uconnect Access Delete Credit,1-yr.
R04P All VP4 Radios
X9CP 1-Yr. SiriusXM Traffic Service
X9FP 1-Yr. SiriusXM Travel Link Service
The build sheet seems to point out that the vehicle has the components installed. That being said, the roadside assistance and 911 buttons are not present on my rearview mirror (instead you get solid black buttons which are inoperable). Whenever I update my radio software, it skips the last two modules/units (might be second to last and third to last modules). I always get the US version of the updates.
So I guess my question is this, is there any way to enable my car with access to the Apps and SiriusXM page? My dealer seems to be unable to do so, at least in the past. Also, after reading the build sheet, do you think the car is at least Uconnect/SiriusXM ready?
Thank you so very much for your help and for taking the time to read through this.
