V6 High Pitched Sound

Guys:
My Jeep makes a very high pitched ear piercing sound about every 10 to 15 seconds, the sounds last five seconds or so, on or off throttle, as long as its moving this goes on.

The sound is actually not very loud, just so high pitched it drives me nuts. My father couldn't even hear it. Sounds like a hearing test... or one of those teenager repellent sounds lol

Any ideas on what it could be? I guess I have to find a dealer around here and bring it in... I hope it isn't normal.

The only other QC issue I found is the power lift gate button in the trunk. It is loose, about an inch up on one side, and the trim around it looks like it's stained with baby powder.

Otherwise so far so good.

It's going in tomorrow morning. I am 99% sure it's linked to the AC. I just figured it out today since it's cooler. I don't have it when I hit the AC off.

I'm also going to have them fix the power liftgate trunk button.

Otherwise awesome. Averaging 21.5 mpg first 500 miles. That is better then I expected.

Dealer claimed could not replicate sound... would not fix broken trim around liftgate button. Claimed I broke it and tacked it on with some sort of black sticky glue... Which on a brand new 40k+ car I assure you I did not. I suspect they are screwing me since I bought it elsewhere. Chrysler has a very serious dealer problem... Oh well off to the next one.

Find a new dealer, it costs them nothing to fix warranty stuff like this as long as they can justify it. The dealer is just trying to screw you for some money.

Have to drive it back to original dealer. Need to replace the whole pillar the trunk button is on. They are also going to try to fix the AC squeal.

3 hour round trip..... But I made the trip originally because they were the only decent dealer I could find.

Solomon Jeep. Carmichaels PA....

I am also in Pittsburgh and I am having trouble finding a dealer to order me an Overland. May I ask about the deal Solomon Jeep gave you? I would have no problem driving that far as long as it is worth it. What dealers in Pittsburgh would you not recommend?

Any updates on this what did they fix or not fix? And what was wrong with the trunk pillar?

I just came across this thread and would like to know if the squeal was ever diagnosed/fixed. I'm having the same problem with my WK2 and I agree that it seems to be tied to the A/C. I didn't hear the squeal back when I first bought the vehicle in February, but since it has gotten warmer and I've started running the A/C, I started noticing it.

Jumping on the bandwagon... I too have had the noise but have neglected to post because I didn't know how the hell to describe it. But what I'm reading above is definitely the noise I'm hearing. Any help or knowledge of the fix would be great. Tthe less the dealership techs have to think the more success I get.

I have the A/C squeal as well; it's pretty easily replicable; just turn off the stereo and crank the A/C, and it will be there when the compressor cycles. I haven't had it in to the dealer yet, but will have them look at it when I go for my next oil change.

Few seem to have noted this yet, but I think that's more because very few had their WK2s last summer. It was fall/winter when they arrived in larger quantities, and by then most people didn't need to use the A/C.

I have this too. I took it in a few weeks ago and they performed the latest TSB relating to the A/C but it is still making the same noise. Haven't had time to take it back to the dealer.

I used to just hear it a couple times a day but now it is doing it every few minutes. I also noticed that it does not seem to do it at highway speed. Or maybe the wind noise just drowns it out.

Oh well... it's only 4-5 months a year that I need AC... kind of like a sloshing gas tank... only does it between 5/8 and 7/8 full... a Jeep thing, I know, I am not complaining... after all, they did put 100 million miles on it during the development, they couldn't have missed it... it's all just a figment of our imagination...

I too have this problem and it is very annoying. The first jeep dealership I took my jeep could replicate the problem but said it was too costly for them to fix it without a bulletin from Chrysler. I then took it to a small town jeep dealership who has been trying to fix this issue for several weeks now. They first suspected the blower motor and replaced it, but the noise is still present after. They are now replacing the evaporator plate? Not sure if that is the correct terminology, but something to do with the evaporator.

The service manager drove with me to reproduce the problem and put on headphones that were attached to a microphone, and pinpointed the noise coming from inside the vents.

For me, the noise occurs between 1200 - 1700 RPM and can be reproduced even if the car is in neutral. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they fix the problem.

jonboverland, thanks for the info! I too have noticed that it seems to be restricted to a certain rpm range. For sure, it doesn't happen at idle, but it will occur when I'm parked and rev the engine above 1000 rpm. I had to run the defroster this morning and didn't notice the noise. Please let us know if your dealer is able to fix the problem.

...to also jump on the bandwagon, I've noticed what I think it the same noise in my GC as well. Like many on here have said, I hear the noise when the AC is on and while I am traveling at city speeds. I first started hearing it while I was talking on BT and the stereo was muted. Ever since then, it's all I can hear! I did a little troubleshooting while driving and I did not hear it when i shut the AC off with the stereo off and windows up. It definitely seems to be coming from the AC unit. Any word on what the issue is from any of you that have taken it in to the dealer yet? I guess I will just add this to my list of things to have the service dept. check out when I bring it in for the first time.

Took mine in on Friday, they said it had to do with the belt and pulley and said they did some adjustments and fixed it.

It isn't fixed. My thinking is that it was fairly cool the second half of last week, so it happened less often. I may have to wait until we get a nice warm stretch so it's happening more often.

I haven't heard anything since my GC has been in the service department, but I will post as soon as I hear something. My Overland has been in service for over one month now for this issue and numerous others. They have been fantastic in their diligence, but maybe it's time to call it a day and cut my losses.

I just got my Overland and the verdict on the high pitch noise was not good. Basically, the service manager told me that Chrysler informed him that the high pitch noise is a result of a design flaw and that there was nothing more they could do for me. The service department verified this by driving new GCs and Dodge Durangos off the lot and could reproduce the sound. I could tell that he didn't want to share that news with me. I was very pleased with the service department did as they did a fantastic job trouble shooting this problem and speaking with Chrysler directly. Unfortunately, all I can do is wait for a fix or get rid of the car. I was advised to complain to Chrysler directly: 1-800-992-1997

I left the service department and walked over to the sales area where I spoke with the sales GM about the problem and my situation. At first, he didn't have an idea of the situation and offered $29,000 for my car as a trade-in. After much gentlemenly conversation, I think he understood my frustration and agreed to start the lemon law procedure. He's supposed to call me in the morning to see what more they can do.

It looks we are stuck with the high-pitch noise for now unless enough people complain.

That sucks. I'm still going to have my dealer run it down to the conclusion though. If it's a known design flaw, then it means they know why it does it and can likely eventually offer a TSB for a fix. I want this to be extensively documented to show that the problem has existed already, in case the fix doesn't come until after the warranty is done.

I did some testing on mine with the A/C and no odd noise or high pitched sound whatsoever. Listened inside and outside the vehicle. Even had my gf listen. Everything sounds fine. Mine was built in August 2010 if that means anything.

So, I had my GC in for its first oil change on Tuesday and left it with the dealer all day so they could look at the A/C problem. I didn't hear anything until about 4 pm, when they called to say it was ready. Their diagnosis of the A/C problem? - "Our technician didn't hear the noise". Since it occurs off and on the whole time the A/C is running, I'm sure it was happening while they had the vehicle.

This brings up an interesting question. The noise is so high-pitched, is it possible there are people that don't have the hearing range to hear it? I drive friends/family members/co-workers around all the time and none of them has ever said, "What's that high-pitched noise I hear?" Although, I've never thought to ask anyone if they're hearing it, too.

Anyway, the service manager contacted me today (probably because I told them I was dissatisifed with the service when Chrysler contacted me with a follow-up survey) and he wants another chance at diagnosing the problem. They want me to bring it back in next week when the shop foreman is back from vacation and can ride in the vehicle with me.

I'll keep you posted.

It could be, but since I cannot hear it on my own vehicle, I'm not sure. I do fall into the category of people with poor high frequency hearing. But no passengers have ever remarked on such a sound either.

Good luck with it.
