I tried to search this but didn't see anything. I attached the video below and uploaded it to youtube and posted the link.
The other day my wife was going to load a package into the back of our 2011 WK2 Overland with the power lift gate. She opened it as usual then bent over to load the package when the door came back down and smacked her on the head. At first she didn't think to much of it, except that it hurt, and went on her way. She told me she didn't think she pushed anything but thought it was possible. When she got home she went to unload the package and while she and my son were getting ready to get the package out the gate slammed down without warning. Luckily she waited till she went in or someone could have seriously been injured.
She told me about it and I went to check it out. I opened the lift gate using both the handle and the key fob and each time as soon as it opened it slammed back down with enough force to rattle the windows in our garage. I had her open it a few more times while I filmed it.
We called Jeep and they were not aware of any recalls and just said bring it in to the dealer. It was Christmas Eve so we dropped it off and they checked it out. They later called her and said it was some issue with a piston and they would call back when it's repaired.
I'd like warn people about this because a small child or even an adult positioned correctly could be seriously injured by the force of this thing coming down. There is no warning tone when it comes back down and there is no safety feature in place to stop the lift gate if it hits something. She said when it hit her it actually hit her several times because it kept trying to close on her. In the video you can see my wife try to stop it with her hand.
We called Jeep again today to see if they will issue some type of warning on this but were told they will enter the issue in a database and if it happens enough times they may issue a recall. I guess until someone is seriously injured by this malfunction it isn't a big issue.
