Washer fluid in antifreeze!

My nephew was helping me and mistakenly added some washer fluid to the antifreeze resovoir! He added maybe a pint before I stopped him. I sucked out as much blue as I could. Do you guys think it will hurt anything? I could have the system flushed but the jeep has less than 1000 miles on it
Thanks

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

You should be able to disconnect/remove the reservoir and dump/drain it all out. It has not mixed with anything until you run the Jeep.

I would try to get it all out and what is ever left "should" be diluted enough to not cause any issues.

It all depends on what solution of washer fluid you are using and it's ingredents.

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

I wouldn't think that will cause any problems as windshield washer fluid is mostly water based. If you place a call to your dealers service dept many say different as that is revenue.
I'm not a chemist but remember when we only added water when low. Your call, whatever gives you peace of mine.

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

You have contaminated the coolant system. Need to be flushed.

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

You you added water, blue coloring and a small percentage of alcohol to your antifreeze. What exactly is the problem?

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

Depending on the brand of washer fluid it can have up to 60% Methanol and or several other detergents/cleaners. Methanol will eat/degrade your seals.

I am not a mechanic or chemist, but if You ran the engine I'd spend the money just for peace of mind, especially when it comes to a brand new $40k plus car.

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

Get the cooling system flushed. I would not risk it. Next time don't let someone else under the hood of your Jeep!

Re: Washer fluid in antifreeze!

Depending on the age and engine technology you may have H.O.A.T Coolant in you system. My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 has HOAT Coolant. HOAT is an acronym for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology. It is quite different from the traditional Ethylene Glycol used in previous generations of vehicles, If I remember correctly HOAT coolant was developed for the newer generations of engines with mixed metals. The HOAT coolant does a better job of inhibiting corrosion in the cooling system. Still such a small amount of alcohol in the total system is unlikely to cause a problem. Having said that I like the previous posts that recommend draining the coolant overflow reservoir.
