Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

Well, my new Overland (just hit 500 miles) has sat through the heavy rains of Hurricane Irene here in NYC. Found the carpet soaked in front foot well the day after. It dried out. I washed it a few days before the second storm, after carpet had dried out from Irene, and no trace of a leak.

Set up appointment for the water doctor (Tuesdays only) and went and discussed a few days ago. Well, it had been raining heavily in the area for days, but in spurts with letups between downpours. This was the remnants of another tropical storm that has caused the news making epic floods in the northeast.

We checked and it was dry after a wash and several days of intermittent heavy rain with breaks between. Battery box (V-8, so its on the right) checked and it was also dry. Carpet that far back has always stayed dry. Leak Doctor and service mgr. said keep tabs on it. If it happens again, to bring it in. Mabye just a freak thing. I had myself second guessing if pass window was open a hairline.
Drove car in heavy, but periodic, rain on Wednesday, still dry. Then overnight into Thursday morning, it poured like Noah was afloat already. The same sustained 2 to 3 inches per hour rain with no letup that Hurricane Irene had produced. Carpet was saturated again. This time, I caught it earlier and found the forward passenger footwell wet, and the upward slope up the dash also wet, as well as the upward slope and shelf next to the right front trim panel in front of the door below the A pillar.

Has anybody experienced this type of leak in this location? I read the new TSB on leaks, and it points out several areas to check. Just wondering if others have had this same leak situation and location, and what was the fix. Light rains and washes won't do it. Only sustained torrential rains for hours nonstop seem to do it.

Mike

Re: Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

We've had similar heavy, sustained rains here in NH.

I just went out to check the carpet. Totally dry, front and back.

Battery box also dry, but I did find a penny sitting in the metal battery tray. I thought I had been hearing the slightest noise upon accelerations and breaking. This penny was probably the culprit.

Sorry you're seeing leakage. Hope you/dealer find the source before mildew starts to form.

Do your seals and weather-stripping look ok?

Yes, all look OK. The problem does not happen when a normal rain or car wash occurs. Only rainfall of a 2 to 3 inch per hour sustained downpour over several hours did it. That seems to point to a drainage problem. Normal water drains okay. Overwhelming rain causes something to back up or pool because it can't drain fast enough. I am eying the point in the firewall where the sunroof drain exits, along with the wire bundle that passes through just below it. My theory is that the water is not exiting fast enough, and as it rises to the openings, the rubber grommets are not enough to keep water from passing. The wire bundle is especially suspect, as if it was submerged, water might go though the wires even if the surrounding grommet is OK. These points are on the service bulletin 23-033-11 issued 8/25/11 and are directly over the spot water is getting in.

My guess is it's coming in through the ventilation system. Check that area below the windshield and under the rear of the hood.

Re: Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

More on this. I followed it every time I washed the car or it rained. Last Friday we had a good rain, but not as bad as Hurricane Irene or the tropical storm a week later. Now I found the passenger foot well floor was dry, as was the slope up to the dash, BUT, the little shelf along the bottom edge of the right side kick panel was wet. This is directly under the A pillar. This at least narrows down the source of the leak to either the sunroof tube, the right side or corner windshield seal or the plugs in the A pillar visible when you open the door. These all look to be soundly sealed. I made another appointment to see the dealer's leak doctor. We shall see....

Anybody else have a problem here?

Re: Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

I had my old ZJ flooded several times. In some cases the problem was clogged drains from the sunroof area and symptom was a leak from the very edge of the roof. Another occasion was that HVAC drain somewhere under the engine got clogged - symptom was flooded carpet in the rear passenger area, water leaked from heating vents.

In your case considering how new the vehicle is drain clogs are not very likely IMO (but still needs to be checked, especially if you park outside which it seems you do). People on this and other forums also reported drain hoses from the moonroof being pinched/incorrectly installed. You can check moonroof drain yourself by squirting water into drain holes (in ZJ they were located in the corners of moonroof opening) from the water bottle. Water should drip from the bottom immediately (in ZJ from under the A-pillar).

Re: Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

Find out/look up where the sunroof drains are. On a previous vehicle of mine, they were under the four corners of the car, rubber nipple things. They were designed to be easily cleared out by squeezing them. Just get outta the way, some nasty mud comes pouring out if they were clogged.

Re: Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

Regarding fixing clogged drains: I had my mechanic trying to clean it with compressed air. This didn't help at all. I unclogged them myself by threading telephone wire in them and pushing it in/out while pouring water in.

Re: Water leaking into left front passenger footwell.

Joe, how old is yours if it got clogged? I took delivery 7/27/11, but it is a Feb 2011 build, so it has been out in the weather on the dealer's back lot for a while. Might just be a clogged tube. I will check it this weekend. I am also going to soap up the windshield edge and blow compressed air along it from inside and see if it bubbles. That is how the TSO says to check. Anybody know how to safely roll back the rubber corner molding along the bottom of the windshield and reinstall? I want to check along there.
Mike

All my clogs occurred with my old '98 Jeep GC when it was probably 8-10 years old. I have no problems with my WK2 (about 1 y.o.) but I don't have a moonroof in it.
