Water Pump Leaking.... Apparently

Hi Guys... I get a call from the service dealer today undertaking the 80,000km service telling me the water pump, radiator and overflow bottle are all leaking. I politely said they are lying and will not approve the replacement of any of these parts.

Some background. 2 weeks ago when on a country road (about 30km from the nearest town) the overheating light came on, I pulled over and switched the engine off immediately (within 10 secs). After some minutes I removed the overflow cap to find no coolant in the bottle at all. Luckily I had about 3L of water with me and after using all of it the bottle was about half full. I continued on my way home which was about another 500km with no problem. I checked it again at various times over the past few weeks and this morning and it still had the same amount of water in the system. I tend to leave the coolant top up for when it is serviced every 10,000km and have never had a modern car run dry or even low before.

Back to the service today and they said the entire system had a leak, after telling them they were lying they came back later and said it is only the water pump (which happens to be the only part my extended warranty would cover). I still said I do not believe them but as long as I am not out of pocket do whatever you believe you have to. The thing is I will still be out of pocket a few hundred dollars excess on this warranty anyway.

Has anyone else actually had a leaking problem with a water pump (according to their dealer) with no evidence of a leak?

Thanks

Re: Water Pump Leaking.... Apparently

A lot of people have. Search the Trouble Shooting/Problems/Service section and there are at least a dozen. Technically it is the seal in the pump that usually fails and not the pump itself.

Is there usually evidence of a leak though? I found no evidence... in the past two weeks of monitoring..

Re: Water Pump Leaking.... Apparently

Not always. Sometimes the residue is very faint at first. A lot of people haven't seen coolant on the floor but begin to see it around the pump area.
BTW, I'm talking about the mechanical seal at the shaft and not the gasket.
