Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

Driving the wife's 2012 GC w/ 5.7l hemi I noticed a low tone rattle type sound that would change with belt load (a/c, power steering turning). Removed the belt to see if it was a belt driven component. Noise then went away. Found the water pump pulley to have a lot of movement in it with the belt off. No leaks no coolant loss, just bearing starting to fail and impeller hitting the housing. Has anyone else had this same issue or had their water pump replaced? It only has 28k miles. Seems like an early failure on a critical component to me.

Re: Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

My '13 Hemi has started to have a very weird noise up front, kind of a fluttering noise, almost like a Kitchenaid mixer sounds like. Not a constant noise, but rather it is louder, then softer, repeating the pattern. My thought is the water pump, but I don't the ability to remove the belts to see if it stops. I need to get it in soon for a checkup. It has 37k on it.

Water pump failures have been reported. I believe there are threads out here on this.

To be honest, That is a perfect description of the sound. I used my stethoscope to double check after i put the belt back on, and heard nothing but scraping / grinding

I have a '13 with the 8 cylinder. I didn't get a noise, but water pump let go as I was pulling in the driveway. Only 35k on the clock

My '14 Hemi started making the same noise around 25k miles. No signs of leaking coolant or any coolant loss in the reservoir. At about 27k miles, I took it in to dealer and they replaced water pump under warranty.

Now there's no noise.....at least for now.

Re: Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

Hmm was looking at this and these things look like they have been failing prematurely over the last 5 years since the 2011s came out, maybe its about time to redesign the pump? wonder if they are just putting the same pump back in to fail again in 30k more miles or is there a revision out? water pumps do fail but in 30 years of driving I have never had one fail prior to 120k. I don't mind the repair if they are covering but I don't like the thought of being on a trip somewhere and it leaving me sitting as I'm at 30k which is about where others are reporting it. maybe time to throw a jug of coolant in the back just incase

Re: Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

This literally just happened to my 12' 5.7L. Noticed it as I hopped out of the Jeep to run into the house to grab something. She's got 38k on her but I'm pretty sure that the dealer replaced the pump under warranty back at 20k or so. Are they really replacing these with parts that continue to fail after 20k?! Of course my warranty just expired soooo that will be a fun conversation with them when I take her in tomorrow. I'll keep y'all posted on what the dealer says/does especially after they already replaced the part.

yeah let us know what they say, id be curious if they are just continuing to throw the same problem prone part in to fail again or if there is revision out to the part number to correct for the early failures.

Re: Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

2013 5.7 hemi, water pump gave up just as I got home last week. Dumping coolant when I pulled into the garage. Just turned 30K miles, dealer towed in and replaced under warranty.

Seems like an early failure for a water pump. I know in my lifetime I have only replaced two on the many vehicles I have owned over the last 25 years.

Re: Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

Its sad that I almost have to let it go to that point of complete failure and towing to get it taken care of. Dealer said that i could make appointment for 2 weeks out, pay for a loaner, then if they decide it is under warranty then reimburse for the loaner. Boo

Weird noise it idle gets worse with rpm change -water pump

13 hemi 5.7 noise up front. Concern it was water pump. Dealer tech hears nothing. Send 75 year old neighbor to pick up, he says noise still there. Some at dealer agree. Water pump now replaced under warranty and idler arm pulley. Sad 75 year old hears but techs state good to go. 35 ,700 miles.
