What is this enging clicking??

Brand new 2015. Had it two weeks. Each time engine is started cold, I hear this "click..click-click..click-click..click" for about 10 seconds. Then it stops and is never heard again. Inside the car you don't hear it. Have to either be standing outside (remote start) or have driver window down. I am leaving it with dealer on Friday.

Here is a video I took with my phone. Sorry about the ending. Did not realize I was still recording.

Any ideas???

Limited 4x4, 3.6 V6

So you had the same noise/issue?
hmmm. They may tell me the same thing.
I also have a 2013 with the 3.6 that does not make the noise.

The hemi does do this, but the 3.6 the OP asked about isn't a hemi last time I looked.

? Evap canister, or not that loud?

Re: What is this enging clicking??

I have the 6.4L with a similar sound. Dealership replaced my belt and belt tensioner, sound is still there. They said it's an exhaust sound originating in the engine area, and can be expected. I'm not convinced, but at least the sound is only when the engine is "cold" and goes away after a while.

Re: What is this enging clicking??

It sounds to clicky to be exhaust related. That would be more of a tap, tap, tap sound.

I bet it's the AC system running up to clear moisture from the air. The Jeeps tend to blow air through the defroster vents while it evacuates air that is warmer or colder than the desired cabin temperature, before diverting it to the proper vents. By running the AC, that will hopefully prevent mist from forming on the windshield, especially when it's either humid or cold.

Re: What is this enging clicking??

Had a V8 years ago that did that on the first start of the day. I was told it was from not enough oil being pumped up to the lifters?

That would cause a chattering noise at a much faster rate. It would sound like pebbles being poured down a drain pipe.

Depends on the engine and lifters. Pretty much all of my big V8's had that startup tick unless I used STP or Motor Honey in them.

Honestly have no idea if the V6 design is such that lifters can drain down and tick a bit or if this would go away with a bit of one of the thick goop additives.

The only other tick I can recall is the evap cannister but thats more of a tock tock tock than a tick tick tick.

Exhaust issues along the line of leaks tend to have a spitting sound.
Big V8s with steel headers can have a tick from the exhaust when cold that is not a leak, just poor noise insulation.

Re: What is this enging clicking??

I would personally not worry about it. It doesn't sound like lifters, it sound more like exhaust expansion. My 5.7L makes a similar sound.
