...which means the bottom end is supposed to go on a nipple (insert boy/girl jokes here) on the differential. Top end breather, bottom end connection.

Your Jeep had a low hanging hose. Very stud-ly. Maybe it needs a pair of underwear (skid plates?) to keep it from dangling.

It's DEFINITELY a breather hose but I can't remember which.

Check your transfer case too.

Re: What's this hose, and why is it hanging so low?

I'm guessing the dealer didn't connect it when they changed my torque converter last summer. So, the hose shouldn't be handing down? The bottom end should be connected to a nipple on the differential? Could their be a problem driving with it disconnected this long? Thanks for the info.

Re: What's this hose, and why is it hanging so low?

That is definitely a vent. I suspect it is for the front differential. Crawl under and look around the top of the front diff for a barb fitting. If you find one and there is no hose attached that is it! Unless you went crossing creeks with the GC it is doubtful any damage is done.

Re: What's this hose, and why is it hanging so low?

^ Thanks. I crawled under in the garage with a flashlight. I didn't see anything, but my chubby rear couldn't maneuver very well (with step bars). I need to pull it on the ramps -- in daylight. Hopefully I'll find the proper fitting.

Re: What's this hose, and why is it hanging so low?

Pulled it on ramps last night. It doesn't appear to be the differential breather unless I'm looking wrong. It already had a short elbow breather -- as seen in the pic below. Maybe it's from the tranny somewhere? I looked around for awhile, and didn't see any "nipple". I didn't "feel" around, because the cat was quite toasty. Oh well, I need to take it in for a leaky power steering boot also.
