White smoke sometimes on start? 5.7

Hey guys, I've got another one for you...

I've noticed in recent days when remote starting my vehicle that at times white smoke (not steam) will bellow out of my tail pipes. The smoke is thick, lasts maybe 5 seconds and then stops coming out.

This happens primarily in the evening... If I drive the car and let it sit for 2+ hours and start it, I see the smoke! ...

With the knowledge I have on car motors I would think its maybe a Valve Stem Seal? However the car is so new it makes no sense. Car has 714 miles on it.

Input please.

Re: White smoke sometimes on start? 5.7

Welcome to the club. A lot of JGC with hemi's do this. It tends to happen when parked on a slight incline with the front up. Its not your seals because it only does it on startup. If it was seals then it would do it all the time. I believe its due to the oil pan being reversed. The sump is forward and when parked on an incline the oil floods the rear of the engine and some leaks past the rings in the rear cylinders. When you start this oil is burned off. Chrysler knows about this and really hasn't addressed it. I just learned to live with my smoker.

Same issue in my 2006 GC SRT8 with 62000 miles, here is the probable solution, if no coolant leak or no oil leak (oil level is safe), a bad Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) + broken PCV pipe could cause this issue, try to change the PCV Valve and Pipe and take a look on the exhaust in every time you start the engine.

Valve stem seals would be blue smoke, white is moisture which H2O being a byproduct of normal combustion gases paying through the catalyst it is not uncommon to see ANY car smoke white, especially with temps dropping.

Here's some pictures to clarify for anyone that wants to know what the smoke looks like. I took these stills out of an iphone video and they're in order:

First starting the Jeep with the remote. This was just a little puff, usually get a lot more than this

Puff of smoke finished coming out and moving around the side of the Jeep. Sometimes there's so much it collects under the eves of the house.

Then, after nothing from the tail pipes for a few seconds, the "condensation" smoke or whatever you call it starts coming out.

Hope this helps people see the difference.

That usually means the valve seals are shot.

If you can reproduce the smoke reliably, take it to the dealer and do a show and tell, it sounds excessive. My '11 Hemi smokes on rare occasion (as do most), just as you describe. Worst time was when I had parked on my driveway which is slightly inclined.

I don't think you are seeing smoke, it is water vapor. Mine will do that, and more when I happen to get high ethanol fuel with a high moisture content (ethanol loves water and if it sits in a gas station's tank long enough its going to be loaded with it).

In my case, it's not water vapor. I CAN reproduce it, and it has been to the dealer several times. Replaced pcv valve, still smokes. Have been told by dealer that Chrysler engineers are aware of this issue and are working on a fix. See other popular jeep forum for more information. Believe me, I WISH that it was just water vapor.

Re: White smoke sometimes on start? 5.7

I don't believe this problem caused by a valve seals, because if it's seal the oil will go through it and cause smoke when pedal pressed, this issue happened to me then I replaced the PCV + Pipe and clean fuel injectors and calibrate the fuel economic by the dealer, they said the car spend too much fuel and when engine off the unburnt fuel may still inside the explosion room, therefore, when start the engine it will smoke, I believe that this problem started when I changed the oil type from Mobile 1 Synthetic 0-40W to Total 5W-20 I don't know what is the relation in this regard but it was a stupid choice, until now no white smoke coming from my GC SRT8 so I hope this is it and nothing else. 2011 GC defective seal sounds not good for this company future, they should have high quality materials to build this type of high performance engines.

This is what mine does. The smoke is oil and not condensation. It smells like burning oil and creates a big cloud. Condensation doesn't do this or smell like burnt oil. Had my PCV valve changed twice and same problem. Waiting on Jeep to find a fix. Not what I would expect from a $47000 vehicle.
